‘I was sleeping in laybys’ article

Interesting article in today’s Guardian:

I was sleeping in laybys
its an interesting conundrum, there are those who choose to live in a Motorhome, and then there are those who are forced to as the Social housing situation in the country is dire. I wonder how people living in the small converted vans will be as they get older and fall ill it must be quite worrying for some.

There is a whole world between full timing by choice and being forced to live in a vehicle out of desperation. A real Heaven and Hell.
Whilst some won't agree, I do believe that Society's safety net should help those who are less fortunate and become homeless it can and does happen to anyone. what type of society lets people sleep on the streets in tents and Vans.

Every single society in the world. Well everywhere I've ever travelled anyway. and Ive been round it a couple of times. It's a problem in both the richest and poorest places. .

indeed but not right eh, in my local Coffee shop (a well known brand) there is a guy who had been 'down on his luck' Sofa surfing etc The manager and management team knew he was having a hard time and they gave him a chance, the guy works hard 6 days a week. They helped find accommodation for him with a housing association along with the management the staff also supported him, he now manages that branch and have to say he is looking a lot better these days and is a nice Guy.

A company that really helps people and gives them a chance is Timpsons and they do a great job in helping people back in to Society everyone deserves a chance, everyones personal biography is different and many of those who's life has been given a rough hand can turn around and become productive citizens we all respect and have a pint with.

The one people keep voting for. 10 years of austerity , social welfare cuts , no building of affordable homes, promoting wealthy to buy properties to rent out etc etc etc .

Theres absolutely no reason for people to be sleeping in doorways etc in what was the 5th richest economy ...

But while everything for profit remains and grows it will get worse.

Even simple steps like not using self serving checkouts etc would send a message to businesses but people don't really care

Then they came for the travellers, the van dwellers, the not wishing to be forced to be like everyone else people.......and no one did anything.☹️

May be austerity is because of the Labour Party mr brown/Blair who opened the floodgates back in the 90s .
That debate could go on forever but the national debt has increased about 5 fold during this austerity. Not to mention the destruction of manufacturing , steel , mining , ship building etc done by conservative prior to the labour you speak of.

All sound bites ...now its the fishing and farming being killed off.

When will people just admit the fact the Tory party only cares about the very wealthy and they always will.

So any attempt then at sympathy for the poor etc is wasted.

Clap for nhs but give them 1% pay rise 🤦‍♂️ at least here in scotland they gave 4% ....

If you've never watched the film im daniel blake it gives a very good insight to the way things are now

Another thing ill never understand is why england thinks there are only 2 political parties ....if you don't like labour or tory then heres an idea ....try someone else ...maybe the greens or summit

indeed but not right eh,

Of course it's not right. I was pointing out that it's a problem all over the world. From richest to poorest (Apart from in Scotland, which is of course perfect). :).

If you can't keep your politics out of the thread, don't post on it. Thanks

I live in an area where you could pin a blue rosette on a dead donkey and it would win an election, these are the same voters that are moaning like heck about the amount of houses being built locally. Did they not hear Boris say he would build, build, build before they voted for him.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you missed my post above.

To be fair who ever got in had to build something with the population growing at the rate it is

Remember these van dwellers in Bristol a couple of years ago? Are they still there?

In the US, we see similar scenes in areas of most major cities. My news clipping service for "RV's" sends me newspaper stories about street evictions and new parking rules in US towns and cities nearly every day of the week.

Can't speak for the rest of the World, but can anyone tell me when the UK had every citizen living in decent housing ? I don't believe it has ever happened ! Nor do I believe it could ever happen.

Let's say all of our 67m people were in really decent housing, then the poor from abroad would look over and think "I'd like a piece of that". Then you'd get another load of people to build houses for. Etc, etc.

Some might say that this is the situation we find ourselves today, which is very difficult to argue against.

I don't think its possible to comment on a thread regarding homelessness etc without it being political .

And no one ever said Scotland was perfect either. This is a worldwide problem but folks answers seem to be to blame everyone else.

If folk really wanted it to stop they could actually do something to stop it ...but they don't 🤷🏻‍♂️

I am a fulltimer, I disagree. It will only 'ruin' peoples lives who hang around in groups of vans and trespass on other peoples properties.

Most fulltimers drive on their own and not in a group, and those who trespass get what they deserve. Sorry to be unsympathetic.

All I can see in this, is you have one set of people who go out of their way to live in vans , in fact Northernraider is in fact now building his own for this, so how is it so bad for the others who say they are having to do it, how is their situation any different.

Choice vs necessity..

how is their situation any different.

I see where you are coming from, Chas. It's difficult, doing something because you want to and being forced to do something are entirely different.

Think of a twenty-mile run

One person enjoys running, has the right shoes, trains every day and then when they are ready goes off for the big long run one Sunday, enjoys every step of the 20 miles, taking in the views, smiles at other runners, at the end a real sense of achievement.

Take someone else, they can't stand running, then one Sunday someone with a whip drags them out of the house barefoot and whips their arse till they are running and then keeps them moving all day till they eventually cover 20 miles all snot, blood and tears.

They both ran twenty miles....
