It's knocking on the door of 6 months from when the new plastic £20 notes were introduce, so if you had forgotten that you had an old paper £20 note squirrelled away in your Tilly hat like I had, then it's time to change it over to a new plastic £20 note. (y)

I asked at the bank and they said it hadn't been announced yet and we would be given a 6 month warning before we have to get rid... And that the warning hadn't been given yet.

Hope they are right. :(

Ha Ha! I was about to say I have owned a Tilley hat for 40 years and there aint nowhere to store money. So I get my 5 year old hat out and search and can't find anywhere to stow money, then I give this label in the middle a big tug, the velcro parts and there it is a secret chuffin apartment with instructions!!
You could have knocked me down wiv a feather!!

My 40 year old hat I bought from him himself at a boatshow In Annopolis when he was just starting his business and he was selling them from a wheel barrow!!

Shops can decline to accept currency which is out of date so to speak.
Bank of England will always exchange old currency for new no matter how old it is , ID may be required.

Just had to leap up & go & check! It’s ok - I’ve got a €20 note! Hadn’t realised the plastic note had been released though! Haven’t been spending with cash, so will have to get them exchanged, but I would think they won’t withdraw the old ones yet, because I bet there’s lots of people who haven’t been using cash!

Tilly hats
Just looked up the price  that's nearly as mad as the price of a motorhome

I did have to invest in a new sun hat back in April as mine was in the van and we couldn't retrieve it at the time due to lockdown
No hidden pocket though

I'm on my 3rd Tilley hat in under 20 years.
They are not as indestructible as one is lead to believe.

I've still got the original two, I could send them back for a free replacement, but they have a certain 'character' and look like they can tell a story or two (which they can).

I've kept £20 in the secret pocket for many years, but they never seem to be there when you need them.

Back in 2000 I bought a couple of Tilly Hat bands hand made out of multicolored shoe laces by a little old lady in Peru, they cost $2 each.

Mr Tilly had personally given her the global exclusive right to make them, and he bought all she could make for $1 per band.
She was by far the richest person in the little mountain village as on a good day she could make 50 of them.

Why how many have you got stashed under the mattress ;)
You can take them or post them to the Bank of England anytime BUT they might ask a few questions if you wheel them in in a wheelbarrow !!!!!!

I use £20's to level the bed.
Far better than using ramps

If it is common practice to be stashing your cash in a hat, how many of you are tying your hat to your head to prevent some scroat running past knocking off the hat and making off with their ill gotten gains. A much easier target than pickpocketing ....

Would scroats recognise a Tilley Hat?
Hardly a high fashion item.

Anyway, it's meant to be emergency money... I'd class being mugged in the emergency category... take my hat if you leave my wallet & Rolex alone

I carry a €20 note and 3 x $1 bills (leftovers from a 2003 Florida road-trip, IIRC) in mine. Not sure the dollars'll get me much help, though..... :giggle:

John got some money for his birthday he was concerned it was old 20s we checked and none of our 20s are the new plastic ones. I have found at least 1 old fiver and several old pound coins. need to get it sorted but not queuing at a bank

Now you all gone & done it!, I had to Google Tilly Hats to see exactly what they are, I have had similar hats in the past to keep the sun off my neck, but not a true Tilly Hat.
Some are listed at £70 on Amazon:eek::oops::oops:
At that price I would expect a £20 note included and stashed away for emergencies(y);)
Cor Blimmy, the thought of Tilly Hat, Shorts & Crocs with socks worn at once! Goodaay Possims:giggle:

I lost my Tilley hat and applied for the half price replacement (£32) , which I duly received. I didn't twig at the time that's the price the retailer pays for it!
Mine got damaged after about 15 years of using it when dinghy racing. A slight fraying around an eyelet.... contacted them and after I sent a picture of the damage and then the inside of the hat with a big black R felt tipped on the label, a new one arrived within a couple of days. Superb.

I look like an utter twonk in a Tilley hat but I really like them

They'd better not try and take my cowboy hat!!! Grrrrrrrrr

In a queue behind a fella in Redruth Post Office 2 days ago, he banked £5000 in "old" 20s, not a word was said.
My neighbour found a bisket tin in the garage with 4 grand in old notes that her late husband had squirreled away, bank just accepted it without query.

I have a Tilley hat bought 15 years ago. This thread made me check it and I found a £20 note there. Unfortunately, it’s an old one so I will have to change it at the bank.

When I told my wife she put her hand to her mouth and told me that I had just reminded her that she always carries a £20 note tucked behind the sun visor of her car. She had traded her car in for a new one three weeks ago. The car dealership’s cleaner must have had a nice surprise when prepping it for resale!
