Had a quote from a well know Motorhome dealership to replace my thetford aspire 2 with the latest thetford series of cooker. £1.797.79.

That doesn’t include the kit from thetford to enable the narrower cooker to mount into the old space. Just wow…

I need a coffee with a little lot of correction added:oops:

It’s usury pure and simple , we had a Neff double installed in our kitchen last year and it didn’t cost a grand , that price for ancient tech is taking the p*ss .

I could say I'm shocked, but I ain't.

Do a internet search on the thetford cooker model a lot out there used & new from £500
That's £620 and out of stock
Just buy a Tefal 8 in 1 cooker (£80) or Remoska (£125) and put it in the space or use the space for something else.
Phil
Do those run on gas

Hope its better than the Aspire Oven, Grill & Hob we had in our Caravan, the grill was pathetic, the oven didnt regulate the heat very well. We now have a Dometic Tech Tower Oven, and we don't even switch it on, as that just burns everything, the grill is pants also.
I will never forget when I complained to the dealer about it poor performance his immediate response was "Don't expect it to work like your home oven, this is camping stuff after all" I will never forget that response, more or less whether its Dometic 3 way absorption FF's or Thetford ovens we cannot expect them to be like home appliances.
Its easier to understand why German vans don't usually have ovens, if they do its a mod that us Brits seem to need more than they do, I guess they cook outside more, as we do for the few weeks of UK weather that allows us to.
I would also check out ovens available from camper van/MH parts suppliers, there is one up Stafford way "Miriad" that seems to stock everything from sinks to ovens, plus windows and vents, everything we need really.
Here's a link to their catalogue, but it might be worth a visit to see the whole range.

It’s a replacement of our thetford Aspire 2….not very aspirational! Grill rubbish (has since stopped working so totally rubbish now), one gas burner stopped working (we never used that particular burner anyway) has been checked and need a complete new assembly running into hundreds to get fixed, bits wobble and fall off occasionally…so I contacted thetford who assured me the k1520 series are much improved…

Now looking into purchasing myself and getting it fitted by a smaller ‘conversion’ compan. I would do the whole thing myself but it’s the gas bit that puts me off…you’re a long time burnt to a crisp or suffocated!!

But you said take out the hob and use the space for something else🙂
The post said cooker. Keep the hob and dispense with the cooker/oven.
Really good small efficiency cookers as described can be bought for a fraction of the price.

We’re both being a bit silly now 🙂the OP Said cooker as in oven and hob joined together in one as seen in follow up posts,I was only trying to be slightly humourous 👍

Don’t know how Thetford dream up the prices, while this is extortionate it’s much cheaper than a replacement tall fridge a friend need a couple of years back.

You know you can get domestic gas cookers with jets for lpg?

Not many (any) would pass any safety test for vans, not that some self builders seem to care. For instance decent fixing; automatic flameout detection and fit pan holders)

We had a Dometic version in the old van that had always been pathetic and stupidly expensive to repair - Never again :swear2:
When we bought this new van the dealer was supplying and fitting, FOC, a new Grill/Oven.
I searched out the Thetford range and found their models were lots more powerful than any Dometic.
We've had it for three years, use it every day and its been wonderful - highly recommended.:drinks:

the price quote along with Evri failing to locate me for the 4th time in a week, not a good day! :(

Yep…thought of a re nozzled domestic but also thought of the safety implications…

I haven’t looked so may be completely wrong but I thought all new gas cookers had flame detection safety cut out? Not sure what safety tests they need for vans apart from that.

Don't 100% quote me, but to the best of my knowledge
  • the hob pan holders (and the bits on top of the has ring) has to be fixed. Some self builders just say "we'll take it off when driving" so it doesn't come loose, but, well, the rules do say otherwise
  • Has to be fixed securely, different fixings on household and ones designed to be tossed around
  • Flame detection
and the other bits (not reg, but needed)
  • LPG jet as you say
  • The gas connection is different I Believe

And the other thing to consider is gas appliances have certified installation instructions and guidelines, like distances back and sides and ABOVE for flammable surfaces. So van hobs will be slightly lower power/flames which will allow cupboards to be above the hob which (if following regulations) would be too close. Back and side distances also vary.

How much people follow these is their own business, and I know I had to install a campervan one in a van slightly outside of the regulation measurements....

So just things to consider and plan accordingly.
