After years of reading about Brownhills shortcomings, we still ended up having a look at what they had to sell.
We were hooked when we discovered a huge selection of vans and a van that ticked all of our boxes, curses!
We returned to our 100 miles away downfall and bought a van; what were we doing?
The support and facilities offered seemed far too good to be true, from anyone, let alone Brownhills. Sarah, the poor soul dedicated to us was the perfect salesperson; nothing seemed too much trouble.
Admittedly our long planned for introduction to our new van, became a bit too hurried due to unforeseen circumstances but as we stayed overnight we were pleased to see the chap back again at around 8 the next morning to complete his hand over.
As we were buying second hand, when morning arrived we had discovered a few things we were not entirely happy about.
Our new van was taken away to the workshops leaving us with our old van and the Brownhills Club facilities, membership was automatic as we had bought a van from them. The facilities include indoor swimming pool, Sauna, Jacuzzi, exercise bikes, a reading / TV room and some of the best showers any camper could wish for. We were booked in with free hook-up for a couple of nights but could have enjoyed staying longer. As the camping is free for up to around 30 vans. There are loads more good things and a few thoughts the other way.
Workmanship is excellent but fairly expensive and we possibly ordered more transfer and additions than we should but not only did we both leave Brownhills praising their virtues but even at 200 mile round trip, we will return.

We purchased our six months old Auto-Trail Delaware from Brownhills in October 2016 after some very good advice from one of their sales staff, David, at the NEC show.
David also guided us through the purchasing minefield and, I am sure, led me to the best option for us.
In hindsight we were very grateful to Gary who gave us a very thorough handover and insisted that we read all the documents when we got home. This resulted in a irregularity with the warranty documents (that could have had very serious repercussions for us) being sorted.
I have had a few small issues since buying the Motorhome - rear minor light, waste water warning indicator, minor surface cracking at the rear, my ignorance re: the fitted Gaslow system - and I was grateful for Shaun’s advice and patience. The issues have been dealt with and they were able to arrange damage to be repaired caused by my clumsy bike removal.
I would definitely recommend this dealer.

This will be my 2nd review of brownhills as i will always praise the good as well as the bad. My other review was not a kind one but this one is the opposite based on a recent event. Quite often i only hear bad things about this company but if they do something good then this should also be reviewed.

We had planned a trip north for some weeks, we were due to leave Thursday evening 16 August and travel up to Newark (not to see brownhills) but to use their club and stay for free for a few days as we had an appoinment in Chesterfield the following day.

On checking the MH Wednesday afternoon, i opened the garage door and the water was everywhere, it was as high as the lip on the garage (about 3inches). I had only filled it up the day before to about 35% (thats about 100litres on ours as it hold 300litres). Called Brownhills ( my MH is still under warranty) and explained my problem and how it was an emergency and it just so happened we were travelling up to their site anyway and could they fit us in. Well to my surprise Sarah (customer service rep) could not of been more helpful, she simply said no problem just come in and see us when you arrive and we will fit you in. Now i dont know if they fitted me in because of my past issues with them (see my other thread / review), i am hoping that they have now changed the way they work and are more accommodating. I have certainly seen others who have been told they cant see them and it would be months before they could. We popped in and left the MH with them, i had already sent them a pic of where the leak was, the screw cap that screws into the tank was obtruding at the bottom. There is one either side of my tank and it looked as though it had been cross threaded. It has lasted 16 months as is as i have never touched it, we went off for a few hours in the car and got a call couple of hours later to say all done and parked in the overnight bays. They had even filled it up to 50% to save me doing it. I know this is probably something simple but to me it was a major issue seeing all that water everywhere. They checked the area and replaced the screw cap with a brand new one, i know as it is a different colour to the old one, and of course no more leaking.

So on this event i have nothing but praise for them.

Bought a Bessacarr 494 from Brownhills for cash in 2016. Asked them for an exchange price against another model earlier this year. They offered me £10,000.00 less than what we paid for the Bessacarr which was an insult. We could sell the van for cash to another dealer for £5,000.00 less than what we paid for the van. Very disappointed with them and as such have now exchanged our van for an Autotrail with another dealer.

Being quite specific. I've only dealt with a Darren in the parts dept and he is top man for hymer parts.
Have used him on several occasions.
Knows what you are talking about and prompt delivery.
Can't comment about the rest of brownhills.

Following on from my previous rant regarding Brownhill's and the poor level of customer service, I have decided to update my views.
Whilst away in Dubai last week I received a message out of the blue from The salesman David Groves who I must say was the one person at Brownhill's who I couldn't fault, then again I know he's a salesman and selling that motor-home is a priority, so they try and be nice, but he genuinely was a nice guy

Even though I had parted ways with them and sourced another dealer for future servicing etc, It was a very nice message and made me think again and realise that despite all the issues I had experienced, I had not been forgotten.

I emailed the Customer service manager Michele on my return to say as its a new year lets move on and try and re establish the relationship. It was a very positive response and I'm happy to say we have had a number of email conversations since and she has personally assured me 100% that the customer service one should expect as a valued customer will be forthcoming in future.

Its disappointing that we got off on the wrong footing and the actions of some can make or break a relationship and destroy much for others. they have assured me that the issues I sadly experienced were fully investigated and there were area's for improvement regarding training etc. At least they have acknowledged this and viewed it as constructive criticism.

I think they have an excellent set up at Newark which is only 30 minutes from home so I'm pleased all has been resolved, but again I must say that Michele has been fantastic and very understanding and a great ambassador for Brownhill's.

I'm confident my next visit will be as one expects and if not, Michele is on speed dial lol. i have left the initial scores as they were from my first review. on my next visit i will update based on the experience

Took delivery of our 3rd new Motorhome this March. I know others have mixed opinions, however we have never experienced the issues that some claim. In terms of value of part exchange and cost to change we have always been very happy. We would not of changed if not. In terms of after sales support I can not praise them highly enough. On the occasions I have needed their help they have been there for us without fuss or drama sorting the problem.

We would never dream of looking elsewhere.

This is our 2nd motorhome with this dealer and i really should of learnt the first time round but as they gave us the better p/x price i ignored it. How i wished i just paid the extra and went with someone else. Handover was rushed an faults that were picked up to this day have still not been resolved, so much so that i am now considering legal action against them (see my forum thread around this). They are simply just not helpful and do not listen, they also do not read emails correctly as 2 times now i have turned up to have warranty work completed and on both occaisions even though they have responded on email saying ok then on arriving they have said we didnt know. This causes further issues as we are approx 190 miles away so always have to plan a complete weekend away to get anything done hence why i try and get everything confirmed before hand. Incompetent is an understatement and for me at least i will never use this company again. If it wern't for the fact that my first 2 habitation checks and 1st service are free i would not even go back to them.

We went to Brownhills looking to change our MH and as Rapido fans were surprised that this "main dealer" had only 1 new mh in stock (a ridiculously huge beast with no fixed bed) and only 1 used Rapido.
Surely Rapido should look after its dealership better if it wants to sell motorhomes and surely Brownhills should want to have stock in for customers to look at?
The salesman we had arranged to see had not turned up as "he is a busy man"! and the other salesman didn't know a Rapido from a Radish. The other sales people were either sat at desks looking bored or more interested in putting bunting up than looking after customers.
In the end we drove to Highbridge and bought a new MH from a salses team that was interested.
No more Brownhills for us!

It is a shame becasuse overall I feel Browhills are a good company and offer a lot of pluses that others have mentioned and I agree with such as the aire, their social events (if interested) etc.

However we bought our first Moho from them, a 2011 Auto trail Arapaho in Sept 2013 and were happy with the deal we struck. The handover was pretty comprehensive but the guy had done 4 that day (a Friday) and we were the last so although we needed more support (as newbies) the time had expired and we were on our own. We did stay and noted several things that needed to be put right and although they did most, the issues that needed parts ordering meant a return trip (not so convenient when you are working and live a 100 miles from their site). They could have sorted all the issues if they had inspected the vehicle thoroughly but I got the impression they left the customer to find the problems and then they would put them right. Their service centre were very slow to deal with the issues and we felt we were hanging around for hours waiting for the man (who was always just on his way....).

After we got the vehicle home any issues with the aftersales were a real nightmare to get sorted. The aftersales desk were seemingly incapable of correctly interpreting what problem I was describing and I only got any sense when I spoke directly to the forman in the workshop. When I realised my batteries were knackered that winter just 5 months after buying the vehicle, they wouldn't do anything about them.

I just felt their aftersales was very poor and what is more we spoke to about 6 or 7 people while staying at the aire all of whom had similar gripes.

We bought our Rapido 7065ff from them brand new, in November 2013 (63) plate so in fact a 2014 model
knowing what i know now we probably would not have gone for all the extras we had fitted, "example" Fiamma awning, after we had it done, thought we could have done with a bigger one, silly little things like that.
Brownhills have always given us great service we have it serviced by them when due, and have the habitation check done
"example" I dropped the motor home keys in a deep puddle, and they stopped working, the motor home was out of the warranty period, key fobs are not cheap to replace, told them my sad story and they got me a new set of keys, no charge.

Issues started on buying the van. We had turned up an hour before they closed and wanted to finalise the deal but they also wanted to go home on time. Deal was done but they were out the door before we were. They made a mess of the paperwork to my advantage and I was phoned the next day to set it out. I was uncertain f what was said so the head salesman then called me back and played a previous recording of my conversation with the salesman. They had recorded that conversation without my permission.
The handover was good with time taken to explain and to complete the purchase when happy.
Driving out we found the reversing microphone was permanently on. The radio fitted to the van had a six inch screen and was supposed to play DVDs . The microphone was disconnected and never played DVDs because it was powered incorrectly although there was a hab battery feed.
The hab door would only close with a hard slam although they looked at that and it resulted in only needing a slam. The handle burst just after 2 years.
One windscreen nozzle burst and I asked them for a replacement as I could find nothing equivalent online. They went through Rapido and were miffed when I chased them up later. 5 months later at a service they replaced the nozzle with a different one. So my van would have failed an mot for 5 months for the want of a £5 part.
Another tradesman clipped my van window and agreed to pay Brownhills for the replacement plastic. Brownhills duly did not order the part or tell the company that they needed to be paid in advance. 3 months later the plastic was duly ordered. I asked Brownhills if they would swap the plastic over for me as they had included the postage and no discount so were notionally £75 up on the deal if I brought them the van. They wanted another £225, someone else did this for nothing as it is literally a 2 minute job.
On buying my next van, I thought I would at least let them quote. I completed their online form asking for a price to be sent by email, giving the details of my van which they had serviced from new. 3 days later I get a phone call, the salesperson had not looked at the details of my van and had not cottoned onto the fact that I wanted to deal by email. She phoned back after I had bought from another dealer and was a bit upset.
I spent too much of my time wandering the streets of Newark. The further from the sale the worse the level of service.

We bought our first MH from Brownhills in Feb 2015. It is a second hand Hymer. There were a few cosmetic things that needed putting right all of which were done before the handover. The handover was very thorough. They encourage you to stay overnight to check everything out and then come back in the morning to explain anything you're not sure of.
We bought a rather expensive Fiat Care 3 yr warranty from them as we were complete newbies and wanted some piece of mind. This turned out to be well worth the money as we have claimed for three things.
Whenever we have had a service etc done there they always phone the next day to check everything is satisfactory.
We've had two free Christmas dinners in their Bistro and gone to a Strictly come dancing event there. We regularly use their compound as a stop over when we're travelling south. EHU, swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, showers etc all free of charge. They even have a washing machine and dryer.
You also get 10% discount in their shop.
Of course all of this keeps you going back and of course we always look round the vans, so it makes good business sense.
If I have one criticism it would be to say that the workshop is slow, but you can have a hot drink and read the papers while you wait.
May be Brownhills is expensive but they employ a lot of people to deliver the service they do. We were happy with the deal we got and I think our van has maintained its value. I would be happy to buy from them again but we are really happy with the van we have so its unlikely we'll be buying another.

We have bought the following Motorhomes from here and the after sales and delivery has got worse over the years so bad we will never use them again. I have included an overall review for each Motorhome.
Newark
Lunar Champ A630 = 8
Preston
Hymer B544L = 9
Newark
Bolero 680Fb = 8
Newark
Autotrail Tribute T715 = see full review

I attended the handover to receive the following
  • All agreed cosmetic work agreed on sale date not actioned on a brand new vehicle
  • I settled to accept some minor extras to compensate
  • The scuff to entrance step masked by anti slip strip
  • The handover I was experienced so I did not need to see the water and gas related items working No water or Gas.
  • No connections for TV from booster
  • No thermal screens
  • Smell from shower on first day due to no trap in shower and told this was acceptable by Autotrail and only solution was to pour a drop of water ever time we stopped Put a plug in which helped
  • First night and sink 1/2 full with dishwashing water leaking badly underneath I had to remove sink and reinstall the pipework correctly (after sales attitude was "ah so you have removed the sink? I will have add this to your records in case YOU try to make a claim under warranty (so they had a get out)
  • Saw aftersales manager when I had to go back at the end of holiday and she was a total waste of time I won't bore you any more
Will we use again........ NO

It was about 8 years ago that I bought my first mh from them .... delighted with their efficiency in the salesroom and THEIR aftercare.

One small hiccup when took mh to their garage for check over, they for some reason removed split fuse and didn't replace it.

They maintained contact via publicity literature and I attended one of their sales entertainment nights ... excellent food, entertainment and no pressure just very helpful...

We have bought two brand new Rapidos from brownhills and they always gave us the best deal offered on a trade in. On the two occasions we had to have warranty work done, one a crazed garage door and the second van a faulty reversing camera they were first class.
We love being able to stay, for free, on their aire as it is so convenient heading from Dover back to Todmorden and we have use of their pool and get 10% discount from their spares shop.
