Is there a handy guide type thingy that points out the main differences between all the different makes of hymers?

I've been keeping an eye out for B544's and B584's but a load of others keep popping up and I find it hard to tell what the differences are.

What's the E signify eg on the E510?

What's the starline series?

Basically no, there used to be some logic with the numbers relating to bed layout but that appears to have gone to pot now.
B class come in a whole variety, B, B classic, B SL. B had an Alko chassis with double floor, B Classic a Fiat chassis with single floor, then later B Class had an Alko chassis with double foor, then later B Class went back to Fiat chassis with single floor (I think that was 2018). Latest B Class are on a FWD Merc chassis with SLC Alko chassis with a double floor but the B SL is on a Fiat with SLC Alko chassis with double floor.
I could go on but I think you get the picture, no rime or reason. Haven't got a clue about the "E" maybe a better spec that the basic ones.

Jings it's all a bit too confusing. So the B584's are A class's even though they start with B.

So is the Merc variant a better quality van?

Hymer invented what is now termed as an A Class and they have always been their B Class range, so it's everyone else who has got it wrong.

Generally slightly better specs but only the lastest ones have double floors.

It comes dome to personal choice, main difference being is that the older Mercedes (Pre 2017) are a rear wheel drive.
According to Hymers properganda:-
The HYMER StarLine with Mercedes-Benz platform fulfils the highest of demands in motorhome travel. As a “B-Class with star” it offers more living and storage space, more independence and greater driving comfort. And the new model generation has even more exclusive highlights as standard.

Our B544 (2012) and a friends B544 (2011) have double floor and are on Fiat MAXI chassis so weights are 4250kg rather than the camper chassis of 3500kg.

I think the E510 is the same layout as a B584 but the ‘E’ is Mercedes and the B is Fiat, also I think the E510 is slightly shorter.

Thanks that sounds about right. I actually asked the sellers of the one of the vans I was looking at and they thought the only difference was a roof rack. Who knows.

It is confusing though when looking at all the hymers for sale.

The E designation does not refer to a Mercedes base. It was a range of A-class (Hymer B-klasse) vans made in the late 90s and built on a Fiat Ducato chassis. The internal specification was an improvement on the standard B-klasse.
Mercedes - based Hymers were mostly designated either S-klasse (top of the range) or Star-line which were internally the same as a B-Klasse. In the latter case, they still had a ‘B’ designation, as in mine which is a B630 Star-line from 2003. The Star-line designation was used from around 2000-2006. Versions with a lower internal spec were designated either B-Classic, or later B-CL. When CL appeared (around 2006) the higher spec version was designated B-SL. Note, the S-klasse was always a significantly higher spec than any of the others.

The E Klasse was built with the same quality spec as the S Klasse, from around 95 to 99, and was built on an an Alko chassis with a Fiat cab and powertrain. The E690 (our model) was dropped in late 1999, but later reappeared as a B754 in 2001, with (apparently) thinner walls and a lesser spec, ie, no roof aircon, no 2.5Kva generator, and no intergral 3 x bike rack at the rear.

Not sure how true this is, but the story goes that the E Klasse was taking too many sales away from the S Klasse, so it was dropped. As I say, not sure about the authenticity of that one. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Hi Jock. I thought you might be along with an authoritative explanation of E-klasse before this thread was much older.

Thanks Philip. :)

There is a member of the Anglia Motorcaravan Club who is an authority, when it comes to Hymer history. He has had several models over the last forty odd years, and is very informative indeed. (y)

For anyone who is interested, this makes some good reading. Hymer/Eriba History.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Complicated isn't it, we had a 2007 registered B Classic on a Merc, chassis was a 2005, Hyme r built it 2006, nice van but not a patch on our 2004 Hyme r S Klasse S820, wonderful build quality just a shame the Merc 2.7 wasn't powerful enough to put 6.4 tonne along.
