Hi All,
Having been touring around the uk we are now planning to move onto Europe.We have all the legal stuff in place .How much planning do you actually need to do??. We don’t have a time restriction at present. We are thinking of just setting off to explore.

The only plans we make are the time and date out and the time and date back. The rest is a very rough “ where do you fancy today” note today not tomorrow. Don’t think that far ahead. As above and to quote that week known sports brand - “ just do it”

You don’t need to plan but if thinking of going soon then it’s maybe worth considering the general areas you may head for and if you need things like winter tyres which are mandatory in some areas, or emissions stickers for Germany or France for the major towns. It may be easier to get these in advance.

Europe is great for motorhome touring but do be aware that depending upon what happens with B****t there might be changes to rules on insurance, driving permits, health cover and pet travel! Those considerations aside we have always just booked our tunnel out,having had the dogs passports in place, and gone. Some great trips.

The good thing about Europe is you don’t need to plan. If you fancy going somewhere or seeing something specific, you just go, there will be somewhere nearby by to park.

And I find it a lot easier than the UK.

France and Germany are, for me the most motorhome Friendly.

Abundance of sites throughout Europe, no clubs like the UK.

Same here. Never book return until we're ready to come back.
Our first trip was to Roscoff which is a quieter port and easy to get out of if you're not used to driving on the 'wrong' side. It gets you in to Brittany which is beautiful.
There is a small town with a campsite about 20 minutes drive away (St Pol de Leon) so you can practice your driving in a calm environment.
We don't like Calais much and apart from Roscoff have got ferries to St Malo (interesting town for a first stop) and Dieppe. We went Newcastle to Amsterdam last year and came back via The Hook to Harwich.
We don't plan much apart from getting the ACSI card and various aires books. No need to book campsites ahead in France but if you're going to Spain you may need to call ahead for the bigger coast sites.
Whatever you do you'll enjoy it.

Travel insurance policies - a lot of the 'annual' ones require you to have your return trip booked before you start and limit you to X days per trip and Y days in any one period of insurance - so check that before swanning off into the unknown.

We always had somewhere to head for on the first night - it may only be for one night or two, whilst we decided which direction to head for on holiday. One of our frequently used first night stops was an aire at Berck sur Mer (2 to choose from) but the year Kate and William got wed - we stayed there for nearly 3 weeks since it was the hottest Easter they'd had for 42 years, the annual International Kite Festival was on, and it was brilliant!

We've never done that either before or since - but if you can be flexible then you simply please yourselves as you wish.

Only thing you must decide before you get there is which way to go .. South , East or West .. We book one way and you are not then faced with changing a booking.

We were wandering through Portugal, on route to the Algarve then Spain, and stumbled upon a quiet spot beside a lake. We thought it would be nice to have lunch there and stay for an hour or two and relax.

The setting was so peaceful and beautiful. We strolled along the path beside the large lake, and the smell of the eucalyptus trees remains with us to this day.

We were there for 3 days! Not a soul around. That's the joy of motor homing. Who needs to book anywhere?

We just book the outward tunnel. Usually no difference in price of return and two singles. We book return about a week ahead to allow sorting out the vet.

Don’t bother with a travel plan as that will probably be binned once you realise how big the countries (France) are.
If you’re taking the dog, go see the vet in plenty of time-pet passport etc.
Make sure your pet insurance cover abroad, if you have it.
Oh, yes, the tea bags in France make very weak tea, fine if you like that, if not take English ones with you, ‘cos if you find English ones to buy in France they will cost an ‘arm & a leg’ at least, same with most English foods!

Don't forget to take plenty of cheddar cheese! You can occasionally get it abroad but it is very, very expensive, they don't make their own version so if you run out you'll have to decide whether to go cold turkey or prise open your wallet!

As everyone has said it is so easy to get around Europe. We were a bit worried the first time we went to France but absolutely no dramas at all. Just enjoy the freedom.

How can it be a rip off - you don't have to go motorhoming in the UK, it's not compulsory
