hi all, am currently loving Austria and near Salzburg. I want to drive the Grossglockner from north to south en route to Slovenia via Villach.

I would be very grateful for recommendations to pitch somewhere up in moho, close enough to be fresh in the morning to spend the day on the Grossgl. Pass but not extortionately expensive like the full facility sites in Zell am See seem to be. Camperstops not in the area, and ACSI, been looking without much luck. Plan to do the drive in next 2-3 days.
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge!
Happy Camping

Pick your day carefully, we set off in bright sunshine, by the time we got up the pass it was cloudy with rain. Couldn't see a thing.
Disappointed to say the least. That was late June.
Would love to try it again though (y)

They will give you a weather check at the booths if you ask them(y)

What a shame! We also did it last June (2017) and were fortunate enough to have spectacular weather - it was amazing. (y)

We did it in September 18, I closely watched the weather and cameras that they have on the route. Snowball fight at the top, in shorts.....

Wow! Hope it was good weather for you Sally. We are currently in Rudesheim am Rhein, weather is cold. We drove down from Koblenz this morning through fresh snow. We will be following your route in a couple of weeks time, please post how it went.

Hi Mike, I stayed at Zell (am) See campsite which was comparatively expensive but could for doing laundry, and some fantastic cycling round the See. It was then a convenient distance to the Grossglockner Pass which was stunning in September, clear views and bright sunshine. Had the day there then overnighted in the car park of a guesthouse in Mortschoch, which cost nothing except a very good supper.

Just as an FYI the GG pass is planned to open tomorrow, check the times though as it's not always open 24hrs in early season and there was a reasonable snow dump this weekend so worth a final check before setting out.

All the gear, and no idea!
Not open till Wednesday 8th at the earliest, due to fresh snow and higher risk of avalanches, subject no further significant snow!

Thanks for the advice guys, as it's the 1st time we have attempted the Alps I am getting a little twitchy! We are in Rüdesheim and had snow on the hills around us yesterday and so a little concerned about the pass. We don't have M & S or winter tyres on, perhaps a little naive to think it would be clear in May!

I’m doing this pass in June, can’t wait!!

Probably stay on the Aire if it’s a clear night.

Just ask locally. I usually take the Simplon once a month to Venice and did so through the winter, i always asked at Brig what the conditions were and they were always spot on !

Keep in mind what ever anyone tells you it can change in a few hours...

PS: it's now showing 10th May as the opening (was 8th..). If it's changing like that then i wouldn't take it without the correct rubber underneath me.

I think we head off on the 20th June on the tunnel. Not sure if we will do the pass on the way or way back.

I need to do some planning soon.
Oh right we will have been and gone by then, think we’re up there on the 16th.

I will keep an eye out for some posts.

What can I expect weather wise at the end of June. Got tickets for the F1 while there.

You could prob keep an eye on Accuweather Europe. Look for Heiligenblut AT as that’s the nearest village (very nice church reportedly containing a phial of the blood of Christ) it’s looking pretty settled up there the last few days of June.(y)
