I think that the elevation figure refers to the total elevation (climb) on the ride.

Just noticed this post as we are slowly packing up to start a trip, including a week at the Semaine Federal, in Epinal France. Never been to the Semaine before but heard good things about it but if you don't like being amongst a lot of cyclists it might not be for you! My wife is the Strava queen so will try and remember to post a few Strava links here.

I've given up on Strava.. don't get me wrong it's an excellent app, but I found I wasn't enjoying my rides as much as I used to , trying to beat best segment times and average speeds and checking the leader board to see who was in front.. which resulted in a lot of the pleasure of just going out for a ride being lost..

I know it's all about be self disciplined and not letting an app rule your brain.. but even when I tried to forget it was running, subconsciously I was still trying to beat myself..

Great app for training, but for leisure riding.. it can be a hard task master.. but whatever you do or however you ride.. you always come home with smile

We sort of use it for different things. We do use it for fitness rides when riding in our local area but when abroad we only do the rides once and it is a good reference to remind us what we have done.

I know what you mean about segment etc. and trophies etc. but I have to laugh as we ride a tandem and every now and then my stoker (wife) gets some ‘sudo Strava’ award as the app does realise there is an extra pair of legs and lungs contributing!

No doubt about a smile after a ride, really looking forward to some great rides in France and Italy over the next 2 to 3 months.

Almost circular route all on National Cycle Route 1 or Norfolk Coast Path...
Burnham Deepdale to Burnham Market...Burnham Market to Holkham Beach (through the wonderful Holkam estate... ) Holkham Beach to Wells next the Sea on the Norfolk Coast Path (stop for Fish and Chips by the boats in Wells) and then Wells Next the Sea back to Burnham Market...
then Burnham Deepdale... all told about 24 miles.

Sunday’s ride. Walna Scar loop in the lakes. Here dropping into Seathwaite. Over 1300m of climbing. About 40km in total. Great day in the hills. Finished off in Coniston. Sorry don’t do Strava. (Only for sussing out trails)

Went out on my usual short ride from Spalding to Crowland (all flat, 27miles) at 8.30 this morning before it got too hot. Would have done a longer ride (40miles) but daughter and granddaughter coming for the day.
I love it this time of year when you only need to put on minimal cycling gear - unlike the winter months when you have to stop and think as to how many layers of clothing is needed for the conditions, and then come back all soaked in sweat.

Spent the weekend packing for a bike event at the Nurburgring so should get some good pics. Like dalspa i do a lot of flat riding in the fens be it on or off road, it will be nice to ride hills and woodlands at the ring.

Jim, no more sexy road bike pics please, i'm desperately trying to resist buying a road bike at present...... seeing a your Bianchi makes it harder. I have the same Aksium rims on my CX shod with either 28mm road or 35 CX tyres depending upon the weather and mood, much more comfy vs 23/25mm road slicks.

Hi All,

We went to the Nurburgring last weekend for the 'Rad am Ring' cycling festival and for me to attempt the 24hr MTB race. Here is my relive for the first 8hrs but unfortunately i developed cramp which cut my night riding out and then the next morning i had to pull out after 1 lap due to ankle problems.



The photos are just randoms from the event during seting up. Some of the first finishers over the line after 24hrs, the first cyclist out of the blocks for friday nights time trial around the Nordschleife. It was a great event, well organised and there was the bonus of free beer

One way on one of my commutes (Pinchbeck - Langtoft). I do either Pinchbeck - Langtoft (29miles), Crowland - Langtoft (22 miles) or if i'm fancying it the full distance or 57 miles. Its not a bad place to commute really.

This is the one I'm most proud of. It's me, crossing the finishing line of Paris-Brest-Paris 2011 (PBP). You are allowed 90 hours to complete the 1200km course and I scraped in with 30 minutes in hand.
I had been hallucinating through the 3rd night due to sleep-deprivation.
You must qualify for PBP by riding a 200km, 300km, 400km and 600km qualification rides in the same year, within time-limits. The longer qualification rides are hard but I hadn't factored in the sleep-deprivation element of the 4 day ride. The wheels (figuratively) started to come off on day 3 and I ended up cycling very slowly against the ticking clock all the way back to Paris.

I saw grown men crying along the way.

I qualified in 2015 (it's every 4 years) and decided to get my money's worth by cycling to and from the start, from Hampshire. I didn't complete the event as I quit due to shoulder/neck problems but, managed to cycle back home. Epic event, huge support from the French all the way, it's like being a cycling super-star for 4 days. highly recommended (it's on again in 2019).

Here's a short video I made of my ride to Paris, my failed attempt at PBP2015 and my ride home. A fantastic adventure now I've had time to forget the pain of the event itself and remember just the beautiful parts of a 1,000 miles in Hampshire and northern France with mates. >> VIDEO<<

Well done for completing and competing in the PBP rides. I have every respect for riders doing these long rides. I first came across them five years ago when I met some riders doing the London/Edinburgh/London ride which passed through my home town. Last year (it’s every 4 years, staggered with PBP) they adjusted the route slightly so that it went right past my house and used the school 100 yards away as a control point. Followed it (online) all through the few days and as the riders came through. Wife took one rider, from Italy, back to Peterborough station when he abandoned on last day. May offer to help out at the school, if used again, in 3 years time. I enjoy cycling, but these rides are on a different level. Respect.
