Having looked at the expensive boxes provided by the likes of Thule and Fiamma, has anyone come up with a practical and cheaper solution for additional storage?
I have a cycle rack fitted and was thinking about fitting a garden storage box on it. The other issue was securing it properly without worrying that it would move in transit.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

I have had one for two years ish, only used it three times but it was bolted to a bike rack and it stayed secure, its a good option to have when you need it

After looking at the prices for a new one I decided to keep my eyes peeled for a used one, they do pop up on the forum occasionally.

i eventually sourced one from a funster in Wales, a fair distance from Essex but at £100 for the box and less than £50 for diesel I consider it a bargain, drove to Cardiff to collect then on to Felsted to drop the box at the van and home by 7pm, a day well spent.

It gave the old banger a blow through as well, 1.4ltr diesel fusion, the box fitted in the back as snug as you like.

keeping a lookout for a used bike rack now as mine is a little too high for my liking.

I bought a Fiamma one off eBay, a year old but never fitted, bargain at half price of new one. Just about fitted in my Peugeot 107.

I would be worried about the weight of the ally ones and they load from the top ,so not so easy to live with, only my opinion.

Also another one on eBay, they say it’s a 500 version but it’s a 360.

I dread to think of the weight of those large metal boxes, but it might make steering easier if you don't have power steering.:rofl:

Couldn't find it on the site, only the sizes.

I bought a used but otherwise immaculate Fiamma 500 off Ebay for a third of the new price and fitted it on a Thule platform towball mounted rack. The standard bolts/holes didn't suit but I sealed the holes up and drilled new ones (with strengthening plates). A couple of U-bolts and Robert is your fathers brother.

I'd be a bit worried about the weight of those "extra-strong" metal boxes! If you're not so bothered about security you can get proper weatherproof bags instead. See Fiamma/Thule websites.

The difference is the fiamma has a capacity of 500L & the aluminium one only 177L

yes, quite so..

but my post was in reply to

" not about capacity..

also in reply the OP question ..

likes of Thule and Fiamma, has anyone come up with a practical and cheaper solution for additional storage?

it is both practical and cheaper..

I will post some images later, but I have fitted a truck lockable storage box under my cycle rack.
They vary in size so you could choose the best to suit.

From the Fiamma site

The Fiamma Ultra Box is a compact rear luggage box that can attach directly on to the rear of a motorhome (when using Wall Fit Kit) or on to a bike rack, by making use of the standard delivered brackets.

I managed to get a large fiamma back box fitting to my bike rack. The box is big enough to get a wheelchair folded into it. Problem i have is that although i can fix the lower part of the box to the bikerack im currently using ratchet straps to secure the top part from tipping over. Im looking to commission someone to make it more secure and useable as im not too keen on the straps

It can be done with U bolts so shouldn't be an expensive job. :)

I modified a Fiamma back box to do something similar. A couple of U-bolts and some holes drilled in the appropriate places. I also added a strengthening metal strip so I wasn't relying on just the box material, although they are pretty strong.
