What a day! - took the RV to the dump spot, connected the macerator, dumped and then followed instructions for back flushing the tanks. The only result was one very wet husband as the fresh water spurted out from everywhere - so it is assumed that none went into the tanks.!!....
Then the black tank gate valve seemed not to close right up ( if it ever did - we can’t remember) and we have a nasty but very slow drip from the black connections. We undid the macerator with a great deal of difficulty and now the whole black and grey outlet assembly seems very loose.
Do any of you have an idea of what might have gone wrong ( no clever comments here please, we are already depressed enough ) or how to fix it - is it an easy job?

Cant help as we never had a macerator on our RV, we just emptied the black tank, then flushed the pipe through with the grey water. Blade valves are easily replaceable, we never had the option to backflush tanks ( sounds messy)
But, have you tried a search on YouTube? Lots of RV 101’s available, I’m sure somebody covers the scenario you outlined.
If you don’t get any help here, you could always pop along and join rvoc.co.uk. Sister site to mhf and lots of nice friendly knowledgeable people there.

Did the fresh water shower happen as he turned the tap on the macerator if so that suggests the tank gate was still closed.
The dribble is probably due to, Ill say paper as its breakfast, stuck in the gates groove
Fill tank with fresh water using a hose via the toilet then if possible try a 3" pipe dump to clear gates
if macerator is only option may take a couple of good flush throughs

Replacing the gate valves is really easy and instant results! Duncan at Star Spangled Spanner is your man. Find back flusing a little from the grey tank into black tank would usually clean the gate valve before closing. 80% of the time we use the macerator as access to somewhere for 3" pipe and gravity not always possible.

For more advice join the sister forum RVOC, loads of good stuff there.
