Long , long time ago, away before you tube I can remember seeing a grainy black and white video of a bread van on that road . The snow ploughs had been through a few times , in places the snow was as high as the lorry roof, so watch this year as it's said to be a particularly severe one. Other than that go for it:).

Since the beginning
Driven the route many times, as we visit the Cairngorms 2 or 3 times a year.
It's not a difficult drive per se, although the scenery does make for a pleasant distraction (y)
Best advice is to check the weather and road conditions before setting off.
Weather conditions can change very quickly, as we found out in march this year. Beautiful and sunny in Braemar - but just approaching Lecht it started snowing, and wind started gusting to "clenched buttocks levels".
Allow a day to visit Ballater, and Loch Muick - park motorhome in coach parking.

We normally stay at the Braemar camp site, as know the wardens. Or you can now overnight in Balmoral Castle car park

More than toes wet now!
We were over that road last month. Went from Grantown on Spey site ( SUPERB site ) over the Tomintoul to Cockbridge road and on to Banchory CMC club site. You can definitely see how this road is one of the first to be closed when any snow is about. A few single track stretches but easy to see what's coming and no other issues with the road. Loads of great scenery, especially over the tops.
And it's closed today!!!!! SNOW - SNOW - SNOW

We have done it a couple of times Tomitoul has a brilliant Whisky Shop also we spoke to the tourist information office and they had no problem with us staying overnight on the car park in the centre of town.

If you haven’t tried the Tomintoul 14 Whiskey i’d Highly recommend it. You can also visit the Tomintoul distillery but you need to pre book. The farm opposite is the owner of Caingorm Reindeer Herd - if you ask nicely she will give you a tour of her farm - wild boar, reindeer, rare breed cattle, & deer. We stopped in their cottage in the Glenlivet estate - a gorgeous place.

They get their animal feed from the distillery - leftovers after mashing.

We have done it in a 7.5m coachbuilt. Great route - yes steep in places and twisty but well worth it. No rush and just enjoy..However, not in snow.
