Doubt you will get anyone put their hand up for this.

A lot of people are sensitive about their number plate being flagged on here. You'll notice that a lot of people will edit it out when posting photos.

You've got more chance if you change the thread title to "Spotted in Burnham on Sea - Hymer" or whatever it was.

yes I've noticed.. never quite understood why .. hardly a state secret

Mine sits on the drive with front plate in full view.. and even when driving both front and back are on full view.. it is captured on every CCTV and ANPR camera it passes.. some buy personal plates to make them even more noticeable.. ;)

I’m in total agreement here. What does it matter?

Yes, agree entirely. Not really bothered who sees the number plate on our vehicles.

The hiding the number plate trend is, I suspect, because people have seen number plates being obscured on the back of certain ‘car transporters’.

However, you only ever see that on crash damaged cars and the motivation there is that they may be written off. Individuals with nefarious intentions could then clone those plates with a low chance of being rumbled.

Cloning a plate from a legitimate car would soon be rumbled.

I quoted the registration number as I managed to clock that but not the make and model. As a newbie Funster this was the first Funster Sticker I have spotted and I thought the Funster would be chuffed to have been noticed. Can’t please all of the people all of the time I suppose:(

Wouldn't lose too much sleep over that one Groggy. As you say, you can't please all of the people al of the time, but I think you will find that they are generally a hardy bunch on here who will not take too much offence at most things and, even if the odd person does, they soon forgive and forget.

My take on the reluctance to state a number plate is that it where it is as opposed to being at home.
In a lot of cases, it matters not as they're normally in storage or parked on a storage site. However, some similar to me are able to park at home and yes, it's noticeable because of the registration but if someone wanted to break into my house, yep, obviously I'm away because van is missing but if its announced where I am, say France, other burglars might see and target my home.
I do understand the discern about spotted elsewhere.

If they didn’t want to be noticed they shouldn’t display a sticker.

Why on earth would they possibly scour ever social media website on the off-chance they see someone they know has posted they are away.
Then, if they fall lucky, there's the possibility they wasted hour after hour searching only to find the house is still occupied.
It would have to be someone they know as they can't get owners details from anywhere.
I would be more cautious of dubious neighbours who can SEE you are away and your house is unoccupied.

We are at a wedding this afternoon, the house is empty and the front door key is under the plant pot.

Total paranoia.

I think you mean 'concern' ?

so now you know the registration of the van.. what can you find out other than

MOT history and whether VED paid or not, which is all in the public domain.. ?
Maybe but thought people weren't supposed to pick up on typos and spelling. Rule 1.

I was. ASKING.. NOT correcting you .. hence the question mark
I wasn't sure what you meant either word could be used in that sentence..

1) I do understand the discern about spotted elsewhere.

2) I do understand the concern about spotted elsewhere.

discern
dɪˈsəːn/
verb
  1. recognize or find out.
"I can discern no difference between the two policies"
concern
kənˈsəːn/
verb
  1. 1.
    relate to; be about.
"the story concerns a friend of mine"
synonyms: be about, deal with, cover, treat, have to do with; More

I have never ever picked up anyone on spelling and or grammar.. there wouldn't be enough hours in the day to do that..

I am with @NickNic with this - just because you do not understand why data collection is a problem for you does not mean it is not.

Google, Ebay and facebook do not collect info for no reason - neither do nasty bu**ers.

If u get your vehicle ID, cloned etc. - Data collection has a use for someone and not always in a nice way.

You may not understand their reasons but it is usually never in a way to help or assist you.

A few years back our MoHo stood in at the side of our house, it went away for some work to be done.
T-leaves broke into the garage as they had seen the off-road motorbikes in there, luckily the security light awoke me.
Funny bit tho was that it was barely midnight and they came back the next night before midnight, they must have been quite a bit short of something upstairs!

I was just pointing out that a lot of people think that way. I didn’t say I was one of them.

Personally I couldn’t care less who knows the registration number of any of my vehicles (y)

not long enough
there are some on here who seem to have a specialist subject of 'you don't want to do that'

as others have already said above number plates are on full view to all at all times, in fact cover one up and see what happens o_O

same applies to mobile phone numbers and addresses, there are so many ways to get them other than casual observations on a forum

some people really need to get a perspective on what is really important IMO of course :)(y)
