They are about 900 watts of cooling so really only intended for comfort cooling at night. I haven't got one, but AC is my trade so have read about them with interest. The concept is much better than a portable free standing AC because it's a true split system, which is one heat exchanger outside, and one heat exchanger inside. They get mixed reviews, but that's probably because people expect too much of them. The best and most powerful system is of course the dometic, but you could do a lot worse than this if you're looking for something lower budget for night use.. Just my opinion

They were selling these at the show in Stratford upon Avon yesterday. Going like hotcakes they were but we wouldn't be able to run them in our batteries..

As a happy medium, would an under bench air conditioner be suitable?
http://www.jacksonsleisure.com/cara...c-freshwell-3000-under-bench-air-conditioner/

Not seen these before, just been reading the installation manual, there is no outdoor unit, you have to cut slots in the floor so it's a neat 'packaged' unit that anybody can fit. It uses inverter technology too so the compressor will start softly with no current surge and will be quiet. If I were needing proper AC this would be the one.

11yrs, but many years a tugger.
Our motorhome came as standard with two large air conditioning units. One in the lounge area and one in the bedroom. We have had our motorhome for seven years and last summer in France was the first time it was ever used in anger. Be aware they will more or less pull as much power as heating in the winter. Further they are noisy and another way to piss off your neighbours on a nice peaceful sunny day. Further, further, you won't, can't, sleep with them on. So as an opinion, don't bother, save your money. :)

The under bench one will be silent from outside. And you'll hear a deep hum inside. It won't pull any more than about 5amps @ 230v

Our van came with habitation aircon - and in 8 years we've only used it twice in anger i.e. when we really needed it. Otherwise just carrying round a quite heavy piece of not-needed equipment. You'd be better off with one of those extractor-type units that I think Vanbitz sell for around £450.

I bet you don't go to Spain in July & August. I don't either, but some mad people do and air con is rather handy. :D

Actually we returned from Italy yesterday - which is one of the 2 times we've needed it. But often we found campsite hookup was insufficient to run it (tripped out twice) and we eventually gave up and came home.

We are at Albir and have had Our on at nights for the the last few days, must say it is a bit noisy, but you get used to it and about 3am if it wakes me it is usually cool enough to put it to the fan setting.
It seems to be when something kicks in and makes more noise than the fan.

That's the condenser, but once the van is cool enough,I dropped the speed of the fan and much less noise, but the noise is worth it

Yes definitely worth it, have you tried any of the other settings to see if it's quieter.

We have an Eberspacher Holiday 111 fitted in the roof of our van. It works on the 12v system and cools by water evaporation. It's the best bit of kit we have ever bought. It keeps us cool in the night and is approved by the JR whose default position is underneath it. We had it fitted in France where they are very popular. There are now a couple of retailers in the UK though. No need for hook up and it uses very little battery power.

I think its the Eberspacher Holiday iii not 111 ... at least that's what I found when looking for it:

also known as the Ebercool I believe:

The humidity inside the van must get bad with these water coolers. It's the humidity more than the heat I find uncomfortable...
And why are they so much money? 200 quid would be plenty for what they are.

I beg to differ, the Holiday III system is more preferable to a conventional air con system which in my opinion makes the air very dry and unpleasant. The unit is sophisticated and fully integrated into the van and connected to the pumped water and 12v system and operated by remote control. Having had our unit operating for long periods and overnight there is little if any dampness in the air. The fact that it operates on the van's 12v system and does not require hookup, the funster's earlier comments about air con and hookup noted, speaks for itself. They are very popular with motorhomer's in Germany and France where, lets face it, the manufacturers are far ahead of their British counterparts.

Got fed up of mine making loud Brrrr noise when the condenser kicks in so went up on the roof and it is the outer cover rattling against the polystyrene soundproofing that covers the fan and typical Dometic the plastic retainers are not up to the job so I drilled 6 holes and inserted stainless steel self tappers and hey presto back like it was when new (only 2 years old and hardly used) no noise when the condenser kicks in.
