All About Avatars
Your avatar is the little picture that appears next to your name when you post on the forum. It might seem like a small thing, but it makes a big difference. A good avatar helps other members recognise you at a glance and adds a bit of personality to your account. On a busy forum, people often spot the picture before they read the username, so having an avatar is a good way of becoming familiar to other members.
What exactly is an avatar?
An avatar is simply your profile picture on the forum. It appears next to your posts, alongside private conversations, and on your profile page. It could be a photo of you, your dog, your motorhome, a favourite view, a cartoon, or anything else that suits you, provided it is appropriate for a public forum.
If you do not add one, the forum will usually show a default placeholder instead.
Why bother adding one?
Because it makes the forum feel more personal. When members see the same avatar popping up in threads, they quickly begin to recognise the person behind the posts. It helps turn usernames into familiar faces, even if the face is actually a Labrador, a Hymer, or a pint of bitter.
In short, avatars help make a big forum feel friendlier.
What makes a good avatar?
The best avatars are simple, clear and easy to recognise at a small size.A few good ideas are:
- a clear head-and-shoulders photo
- your motorhome
- a pet
- a simple logo or cartoon image
- a favourite holiday or rally snap
Square images usually work best, as they crop neatly.
How to add or change your avatar
Adding one is straightforward.
- Log in to the forum.
- Click on your username at the top of the page.
- Select Avatar.
- Click Upload or Choose file.
- Pick a photo from your phone, tablet or computer.
- Adjust the crop if the forum asks you to.
- Save your changes.
Want to change it later?
No problem. Just follow the same steps and upload a new image. Your new avatar will replace the old one.If the forum gives you the option, you may also be able to remove your avatar and go back to the default image.
A few avatar tips
Pick something bright and easy to recognise.
If you use a photo of yourself, a close-up usually works much better than a full-body shot from twenty feet away.
If you use a motorhome photo, make sure the van is large enough in the frame to still be visible when reduced.
And, of course, keep it friendly and suitable for the forum.
If it will not upload
If you have trouble uploading an avatar, the usual reasons are:- the file is too large
- the image type is not supported
- the picture is too small or oddly shaped
- your account settings or permissions may not allow it yet
