We carry photocopies in a folder in drivers door,and the originals in a secure place in hab. area :thumb:
Never needed either.
Oops-didn't say what docs. Registration Doc, MOT, insurance cover note, Passports.

You need Insurance Doc's, Driving Licence and Vehicle Logbook (V5 Doc)
They normally only accept originals, but as previous post has stated, try a photocopy first.

Oh, and don't forget your Passports and Ferry/Tunnel tickets.

I've been asked to produce twice, once in France and once in Belguim, only originals will do.
Also in France the law wanted to see weight limit proof, (on the side by hab door on ours) lucky I also had a ticket from recent weigh bridge, so be wise and don't over load.

We also scan all our documents and email them to ourselves, so we can generate additional copies if needed. You can even send them to a kindle.

Probably a bit over the top but it's no hassle.

Paper counterpart of driving licences (and the photocard)

Also carry photocopies of the above so if someone wants a copy I can keep the original.
The only time I have needed any of this bumf was when I had a toad breakdown in Belgium, the repair garage would not do any repairs without seeing the registration document. Needless to say I had the MH documents but had forgotten those for the toad. Luckily my stepson was able to find it and fax it through to a campsite for us.

In most of Europe it's a legal requirement to carry your original docs with you (Insurance, V5, driving license etc) you'll get some tolerance on the road side but if asked to "produce" then you'll require the originals.

Britain is verging on unique for its attitude to carrying documentation.

I've been pulled over 5 or 6 times in France and they seemed very concerned with the driving licence, giving only a cursory glance to the insurance etc. ymmv.

Last time in Belgium, I completely forgot to bring any of it. I didn't even realise I'd forgotten until I got home, which is good, as I'd have been pretty nervous...

I don't think I've ever travelled across Spain on a Sunday without being pulled.

You would need all documents that you would carry in the UK . plus High Viz jackets for everybody on board , two warning triangles , spare bulb kit , first aid kit , they dont normally ask for the paperwork , just your driving licence and passport.

Also EU Health card and take copies. Two pair prescription glasses are needed in Spain. We always carry copies of prescriptions too, just in case. Just photocopy everything. Breakdown cover etc. We carry a soft backed folder with poly sleeves and have a few of each document inside. The originals are safely locked away separately. The list goes on. Better copy it all than wish you had later oh:

Hi viz jackets as mentioned already, but have them by the door and put them on before getting out, the French are really keen on this, having them in the garage is still breaking the law

Not too sure if this only applies to motorways, presumably stopping beside a road is the same as parking, but if broken down I think I would always put mine on to be safe (from the law as much as other road users)

I have yet to meet anyone who has been asked to show their hi viz, warning triangles, prescription glasses, breathalysers or safety boots [one of those may be a hoax, but who knows...]. On the other hand, I have been stopped twice and asked to produce originals of reg doc, insurance, driver's licence. Can't see the point of not taking originals, since they have to be somewhere...as others have said, scanning all important docs and emailing them to yourself is a really good idea. Especially if you have an internet [Yahoo, Google] account that can be accessed from anywhere.

2 warning triangles
Set of bulbs
Cuddly toy
Fray bentos pies
Lots of booze, well enough until we get across the pond.

Off tomorrow on midday Chunnel

Gent first stop, then Mosel region, and if the weather is crap, we will head for the South of France, as we have never been there.:Cool:

Am I right in thinking that in France your passport has to remain on your person because they have a national ID card system? I seem to recall reading that somewhere.

Another useful document is a Camping Card International (if you're a CC or CCC member) which will give you discount on some campsites and will prevent you having to hand over your passport at reception as proof of ID.

You will also need your insurance certificate which will have translations into various european languages to confirm your european cover.
