Chester to Holyhead, looking to park free for about 8 hours (1 Viewer)

In mid June we are travelling from Kent to Holyhead for a 02:30 am ferry to Ireland and will arrive at the ferry port about 8-12 hours before we board ship.

We are looking for a stopping point anywhere between Chester and Holyhead where we are not in anybody's way, is quiet so we can just relax and do nothing (the previous week will have been very busy indeed), and is in preference free or low cost.

Close to the Chester - Holyhead route is a must but whether inland or on the coast doesn't matter, we just want to have a rest up.

Any ideas please?

The little Rodee car park in Chester. Stayed there overnight before the Chester show. Near to the Citi centre, by the river. £5.80 all day parking.

You can also park at some lay-bys along the route to Hollyhead.

St Asaph, there is parking on the High Street, the car park by the river has a height barrier.

There is a car park outside NatWest Bank or you could park up on the industrial estate out of the way.

Just a suggestion. St Asaph is a very quiet, sleepy place and just off the main road.

Rhos-on-Sea, free parking along the prom, no time limit or West Shore Llandudno, again free parking along the Prom, (not Llandudno itself just West Shore but it's walking distance into town centre)

You might try Rhosneigr - not much to do but the beach is accessible. There's a surf shop at Rhosneigr with a private car park if you fancy going surfing!

Just past Rhosneigr is Anglesea Airport and there are a few pull ins along that road. It depends on if you want facilities or not.

Another alternative might be Kinmel Dunes near Abergele. You go past Asda on St Asaph Avenue and keep going towards the beach. There are a couple of motorhome parking spots there just outside the main dunes car park. Height barrier to the main car park but there is an emergency gate which after a phone call to the local council they may allow you to open. Alternatively if both the motorhome spaces are occupied park in Asda, stock up with any odds and ends and walk to the dunes after asking if it's okay to park the motorhome. Asda were always very helpful when we lived there.

Many thanks one and all, as usual this forum is so helpful and full of ideas that we're spoilt for choice.

We wont need any facilities, just somewhere we wont bother anyone and no one bothers us, a day off.
Ahead of us is our crazy family in Ireland just south of the border, and then onto working out what Cork and the SE coast has to offer, out first visit to Ireland, can't wait.

Once you get past the madness of Prestatyn and Rhyl you are into Bungalow-ville through Abergele. Inland is quieter. Past Abergele it's more refined. Llandudno is nice as is Conwy (difficult to park even for cars when I was last there though). Once you are on the island it's much quieter and there are a few places you can pull off the road. Beaumaris is nice and you can park on the sea front. If that is too busy for you then stay on the B5109 until you find a lay-by you fancy.

Have a great time in Ireland - I'm jealous!

Promenade in Old Colwyn

Turn off the A55 at Old Colwyn (about half way between Chester and Holyhead - it's just after you hit the 50mph sign), turn right and the promenade is immediately in front of you (go either left or right) - plenty of parking spaces just there - they're lined sideways but as its free anyway, you can park over several bays (there were about 5 motorhomes parked there the other night and motorhomes park there overnight regularly. The only time I'd not recommend is winter - when there are strong waves from the sea splashing salt water over). Then you're right back on the A55 to continue in the morning.

If you don't mind diverting from the A5 on Anglesey there's 3 spots on the SW coast along the A4080, all close to pleasant beaches:

Aberffraw: 53.19251,-4.461153

Next bay up from Cable, before Rhosneigr: 53.216229,-4.501381
