At the recent MOT an advisory was given that the exhaust system was leaking gases.

I have spoken to ESSANJAY at Poole and they have informed me that if your vehicle is an AL-KO chassis conversion a standard FIAT exhaust will not fit and a specialist one has to be made.

They informed me that AL-KO remove the original FIAT exhaust and fit a bespoke system when building the chassis conversion and that AL-KO do not offer after support as each exhaust is an individual design.

I have no reason not to believe ESSANJAY but find it rather annoying that if the exhaust fails you have to get a bespoke one made.

Has any Funster discovered this problem before?.

Yes many many times sometimes a standard left hand drive exhaust will do the job
others you have two chances slim and non
The cheapest/best option is to go bespoke Stainless, fit once and forget also adds value upon re sale

Presumably a part available from Lunar as they did the conversion. Might be a bit problematic since Lunar pulled out of the UK motorhome business a while back. Someone else must have solved this problem but not something I have had to do. Hope you get a helpful answer soon.

Apparantly not, the chassis conversion was done by AL-KO and then sold onwards to Lunar who do not convert the base vehicle.

A fellow funster (fisherman8) is currently in Brugge in his Lunar roadstar 786 (same chassis as ops 780) with a broken exhaust. I will get him to post how he gets on finding replacement parts.

As far as I am aware the exhaust is the same Alko or not.
The cabs are delivered bolted back to back in pairs with exhausts fitted.

I went for a vortex exhaust systen. Full stainless steel plus extra silencer to make it quieter. The silencers are performance versions and the vortex unit is supposed to give better performance and economy. I get around 10% better economyand change down from 5th gear less.

Bare in mind it is a fully tig welded system custom built for the van, not an off the peg stainless steel system.

If you search the forum I did a thread about it, I am extremly satisfied with tje system. The system is not cheap but if you are planning keeping your van a few years it is well worth considering.

I have just spoken to Fisherman8. It seems that the down pipe from the engine has parted company with the flange where it connects to the front box. Fiat have said that it will take at least 2 days to source anew part.
Fisherman8 has slowly progressed to Dunkirk and is currently waiting to get the van up on a ramp to have a temporary fix applied.

Gentlemen,
I say !gentlemen! as not many ladies show interest in exhausts.
My Hymer Swing L/H goes in the morning for a new Exhaust, when we had the last one fitted by the same company, it had to be converted by 'Cut' and welding.
Not so easy this time five Stockists no longer had Ducato products.
Eventually found one that did. So the new exhaust with two silences has to be modified, the rear silencer cut off turned over and the bracket cut and welded, then re-welded to the exhaust, before fitting.
Total cost £127, which I thought was very good. This is a local family company with loads of experience and nothing seems to worry them.
Hopefully this one will get me past the 'Why Worry Time'
I wont be paying for the Hearse.
Best Regards Mac
