Morning fellow funsters. We have 5 weeks to play with and are off on the tunnel with pooch this Sunday. Normally stick to France but we wondered if it would be practical to think we could get down to the Barcelona area and spend a couple of weeks there without rushing. Bearing in mind we don't do earlies unless we can help it. Haven't been to Spain with the motorhome before so any advice would be appreciated.

From Calais it's a steady 3 night stop to Costa Brava, non toll...
Go for it..:thumb:

You dont get many free aires in Spain so you will be looking for campsites or pay aires..
Have a look at www.vayacamping.net

Have a great time! With 5 weeks to play with, you've plenty of time for a relatively leisurely trip down and back up and the weather should be pretty good this time of year. I wouldn't rush it, but that's only because I prefer to restrict the driving to around 200 miles per day, which gives plenty of relaxing time. We were intending to do Barcelona on the way back from Murcia last month, but were warned off by lots of the regulars on the Los Madriles campsite (thieves, muggers and pickpockets).......in Barcelona, not on the campsite! I guess you know France well enough and have favourite places in mind, but if not, we stayed on Aires at Aigues Mortes, Champagne and the Somme on our way home, as well as at a lovely site just outside Cassis. Best of luck!::bigsmile:

We have just come back from almost 4 weeks in France and Spain. Got as far South as Aguilas in Spain, before heading back. Shortest stay was one night on sites and Aires and longest was one week on a site.

We took 4 days to get to just North of Barcelona. After a lunchtime tunnel crossing we stopped at a nice new Aire at Neufchattel, just North of Rouen. Second night was another good Aire at Moulins, and third night was at a free Aire (no water or waste though) at a quiet village near Montpelier. From there it was an easy run to our first Spanish campsite.

We did not really rush down and generally stopped quite early each night.

Just wondered which way you travel down through France - we were thinking of going down through Clermont Ferrand?

A great and my preferred option, you get to use or at least see the bridge at Millau and the Carmargue is better at this time of year, quieter and some of the marshes can honk a bit in summer

Have fun

Hope the OP doesn`t mind me butting in.

We are in a similar situation, looking at leaving on 4th May (ish) via tunnel, with 28ft MH, trailer with scooter and dog.

Only been to France once in MH (no trailer on that occasion) for 3 weeks in 2012.

We have about 8 weeks this time and will book a single so we can be flexible on when we return. Also looking at getting to Costa Brava and finding a nice site for probably 2/3 weeks, or might break this down to a couple of shorter stops.

First decision is whether to leg it down to Spain and meander back or the other way round.
This decision may well be decided by the weather in northern France, if it is miserable when we get there, we would probably head south quicker than we might have planned.

Would be interested in whether there any other considerations apart from the weather which we should think about.

Also any recommendations for nice quiet sites along Costa Brava. A pool would be nice and decent wifi. Don`t mind being a little out of town as we will have the scooter to get about. We have the ASCSI book which will hopefully keep the cost reasonable.

Would we have any problems getting onto sites in May/June without booking? I know there was a lot of discussion about how busy Benidorm was a few weeks ago.

Any ideas/suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

Steve

Yep that is the way we went and came back. After Rouen we went via the N154 (generally good road) to Orleans. From there you can pick up the tolled A10 then A71 through to Clermont Ferrand. But we didn't go that way, and instead drove on the D2060, D952, D2007, A77, N7 (now got a new number), and D2009 and picked up the A71 just North of Clermond Ferrand. It is used a lot by motorhomers, judging by the number we saw.

If you go that way we found a good, safe, peaceful and free (no charge for parking of water) Aire at Le Cheix on the D2009 on our way back home. It is in the Vicarious Aires book. But you need to get there early. We arrived at about 4ish and got the last "official" hardstanding place, although 3 others sneaked in afterwards on the grass! And it will only get busier in the next few weeks I guess
