I have a Autotrail Cheyenne 2007 840s with a ducato 3ltr diesel engine, with 21k miles, only had it since last week. The problem I have is when I start the vehicle as soon as I let go of the key ther is a clunking sound from the engine.....The engine runs fine otherwise. Any ideas would be appreciated..

Should add as soon as engine starts running the clunk is no more.

I have the same engine in my Autotrail, apart from the starter motor being loose, it may well be the exhaust striking something it would be work looking underneath whilst the engine is started, if you find it let us know:Smile:

OK took the MH down to reputable garage and they had a mechanic who had just left a Fiat main dealer and he had a look and said that the mounts look ok and mentioned the fact that the clunk is/was a n inherent problem with a 3 Ltr engine, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whom am I to argue, he did seem genuine, also stated that it all depends where the engine stops ie on what stroke depends how loud the clunk is!!!!!!!!!!!! Anybody else with a 3ltr 160bhp suffer this??

could be the pre-engaged starter bendix is a bit vicious on its engagement with the flywheel.

The starter motor gear (bendix) is thrown into engagement with the flywheel (ring gear) by an electromagnet fractionally BEFORE the starter begins to turn.
The magnetic force used to engage could cause the bendix to 'clunk' as it engages and/or as its released .

Never noticed a clunk though there has always been a thump as it starts but I can't find it maybe one of the mountings is a bit soft.

Got tne same on a knaus 700lg . I thought it was an issue when buying but was assured it was an inherent thing. Time wll tell (fingers crossed).

Does it make any difference whether it is manual or Comfortmatic? As I say mine has never clunked.

As far as I know all gearbox problems on the x250 model have been related to the manual ones even the dreaded judder didn't seem to effect the comfortmatics.
Although strangely enough I have never had judder on mine but there are a few gear ratios and mine is lower geared than a mates 3 litre panel van which incidentally judders like hell in reverse even empty.

Well finally got to the bottom of the "clunk", cut a long story short, it was a duff battery losing voltage or whatever its called when starting the engine . A auto electrician friend had a look at it in relation to the radio filing etc and the fact that the electrics failed??? and said it needed a new battery, so off I go and get one, a Varta, £169. fitted it and lo and behold. Vehicle starts perfectly with no clunking at all. result Now and its a big NOW, need to try and get me money back, that will be a fight.
