I've just seen a YouTube video of someone converting a Land Rover Defender into a rough-and-ready camper and was thinking about having a go myself. What he didn't do was give himself any extra headroom in the back. Does anyone know if you can get an elevating or taller replacement roof for a Defender?

If you are seriously intending to do one then I have a 1968 (tax exempt) Series 11a LWB landrover available for £600. To get extra headroom just add another sidewall on top, you would have to fabricate something around the cab area but not too difficult in the scheme of things. or why not remove the entire back and make a proper coachbuilt replacement you can make it a tad wider then as well. Seen some on utube they look good.

many many years! since I was a kid
dormobile did a raising roof for the 110 defender but that was years ago. you might find one second hand and refurbish it. take a look at overland prepping sites, they tend to have links to just about anything to upgrade landrovers. or you could track down an ex military defender ambulance. they make brilliant go anywhere campers

Quite a few people have done LR conversions. An old Army ambulance might a good starting point though these didn't have lifting roofs, just a higher rear body.

I can only suggest whatever you do keep the weight low down and if necessary see what you can do to stiffen the roll resistance. Some of the Army LR ambulances were famous for being rolled and I nearly rolled a 110 standard vehicle myself just because it had two full jerry cans strapped to the roof and I was caught be surprise at the first bend I took a bit quick. It may not have gone onto two wheels but it certainly felt like it from the inside!

There are some good points there - many people use a roof tent instead of changing the inside about. Unless you have good workshop facilities changing the layout and raising the height will cause centre of gravity problems - having said that there is option of adding air assist bags or changing the suspension from standard to heavy duty and double spring them similar to the 130 defender suspension. You really need to speak with a specialist to get the right configuration of suspension with safety.

One year. A whole one!
There are pop-top raised-roof conversions available for the 110. Can't recall who, though.

I'd suggest the 130 as a better base.

Some belting ideas here :roflmto:

Broken Link Removed

Agree, there are some crackers there.

Had 3 Land Rovers - 1949 SWB soft-top; 1961 SWB hard-top & 1990 Discovery.

Made a make-shift bed (cut-out plywood platform with an airbed) to go in the '61 hard-top. Used to sleep up in the mountains, in winter, in Snowdonia. Problem was the condensation, which dripped on your face and everywhere else all night. :whatthe:

taller roof fro Landrover

Yes you can get a taller roof for a Land rover 110 this is GRP and is about 14/15 inches taller than a standard roof.
All you need to do is to unbolt the factory fitted roof, ( lots of small bolts)
and the replacement roof simply bolts on in place, you would need to insulate the new roof to prevent condensation.
You have probably seen these roofs on ambulances used for mountain rescue and the likes.
I cannot recall the name of the manufacturer but you should be able to Google it or go on one of the Land rover forums. Land rovers are tight for space as they are quite narrow vehicles but if you only want a basic camper you can fir these out quite nicely/
