We've decided it's time to adopt another second-hand mutt. We have contacted 3 dog re-homing centres and none have replied. Why is everything so flipping difficult?

These days they charge more to allow you to rehome a dog than just buying one unless it is an elderly dog or one with health problems. It is big business thinly disguised as rescue centers. A local adver in free newspapers is likely to produce more dog offers for free. Good luck with the search.

I've always adopted adult dogs from rescue centres but this last one has rather put me off.

We had Lula from Many Tears in Llanelli at the end of January. She's an ex-breeding bitch with the sweetest nature.

We were told that she had an ear infection which they had started to treat (but not that she had a heart murmur until we picked her up)

After completing the antibiotics and eardrops the infection was no better so our vet took swabs.

It turned out that she had an untreatable infection which was resistant to all antibiotics. On the vet's advice, we reluctantly returned her as the infection is transferable to humans with compromised immune systems.

We are heartbroken - not to mention £400 out of pocket.

Our last rescue dog cost us in the region of £10k to rebuild. Aptly named 'Bandit'

SESAW have dogs for rehoming if anyone is in the Suffolk area. Dawn (S) does the home checks etc. plus also runs the Facebook page for them. We foster the ones that don't go well in kennels, which is how we ended up with idiot dog, Jake.........

many many years! since I was a kid
having worked in dog rescue at the sharp end of the stick, I can honestly say that the biggest welfare organisations are uneconomic businesses but the smaller local ones are run on a shoestring purely for the benefit of the dogs. we were just happy to find a suitable loving home and were delighted if we got a decent donation. the money was secondary though and our bank account rarely covered all the expenses

thankyou for recycling a dog from a rescue and rehoming specialist...thats a place available to help another:thumb:

We looked, but no GSD's on website. I've had a dog(s) for the last 57 years (from the age of 10) and have always wanted a German shepherd dog, to me, they just look like how a dog should be. Every dog I've had with the exception of one (Black Lab) has been a GSD cross. I go to the rescue homes saying this time and get talked into something else. Mind you I wouldn't change one of them, they have all been great dogs in their own way. BUT this time I went to UK German shepherd dogs for adoption, surely this time, but what the hell, whatever. :roflmto: :roflmto: :roflmto:

Just told Dawn - she says thanks for looking anyway. They have a GSD about 2 1/2 yrs that isn't on the website. Dawn hasn't seen it as very recent addition and she only heard from Maggie about it.. Anyhow, looks like you are well sorted :thumb:

Oh no! I am sorry to hear you had to go through all that with Lula. Don't give up though, the right dog is out there somewhere.

I tried to get a rescue boarder terrier when we were looking, but the lady at the rescue place put up every barrier and excuse to us having one. She never even met me, just talked to her on the phone. Ended up going to a local breeder as I knew that was the type of dog I wanted. After a life time of having the first dog I fell in love with at the rescue centres I was determined to have the type I wanted this time.

This is Lucia. My daughter's dog who I share on regular occasions ... we acquired her from a homeless man who had been found a job and flat but the flat was 'no animals'. We often take her to see him and she still recognises him and gives him lots of love .. but is always watching to make sure we don't leave her behind. She is gentle and loving and very intelligent.

Joy, we have had a few like that as fosters - that is how Sasha the GSD cross above came back to us. If she had stayed longer than a week then she would probably still be here...... we still get our fix and see her regularly on Sudbury market on a Thursday. Lovely looking dog, that :thumb:

I`m a newbie, now 1 year
My first rescue was a white German Shepherd, not wanted by her breeders as they could make more money out of tiny dogs, how heartless, they had her and both parents, and they were going to have her put down, I don`t think much of some dog breeders., she was three years old, and she was fourteen when we lost her, and she was a super dog, my four girls grew up with her. I have had five rescues since plus four puppies, still have two rescues , plus a two year old Bearded Collie had her since she was seven and a half weeks old, from good breeders, the last rescue is a handful, had so many problems, he is a lot better than he was, he is eleven this year, so doubt whether he will be any different now, will not part with him though, we took him on so is our responsibility, all the others turned out brilliant dogs, another German Shepherd with lots of problems turned out to be a super dog, still miss her, for the reasons with the last rescue I wouldn`t take on another one, not unless I knew most of its history.

Good luck there are hundreds of dogs out there that deserve a good home, hope you get what you are looking for.

Margaret

we currently have 1 rescue, Ronnie who is 3 and a staffy X about the size of a labrador, but who knows. the other 2 we took on from a family that accidentally bred their 2 staffies and then struggled to home them all. we agreed to take on a girl when we spoke to them on the phone. when we went to see them, I also fell in love with the runt of the litter, who kept climbing up me. so we have ceran and merlin, who are obviously both 2 years old now. did think for a while i needed my head examining having 3 crazy dogs, but with love and training, they are all perfect

as for people who think all rescues are damaged goods, i can tell you that i have even rehomed dogs that were previously shown at crufts. it is generally not the dog's fault they get put up for recycling. the usuals were relationship breakdown, having a baby or moving home. why not give a trained happy confident dog a second chance and a new family?

That is how Idiot dog Jake adopted us - break up and then he was poorly (nearly died on our kitchen floor) and pretty well decided for himself that it wasn't a bad hotel to stay in. Dawn in bed (had an op yesterday) and Jake is currently guarding the bedroom door
