Yes, up to 50cc.

Over that you need to do the CBT and then take a test.

Full moped only..

to ride anything bigger you must also do compulsory basic training (CBT)

Indeed, however you get your provisional bike licence, you'll still need CBT until you pass.

Indeed, however you get your provisional bike licence, you'll still need CBT[HI] until you pass[/HI].

you can't go on the road until you've passed the CBT

and it is only valid for 2 years.. after which you have to resit it

Compulsory basic training (CBT), theory test, practical test on all powered 2-wheeled moped

The legal definition of a Moped is a motorcycle with an engine capacity not in excess of 50cc, a maximum design speed not exceeding 50kph (31 mph) and if first used before 1/9/1977, can be powered by pedals.

A scooter exceeds all the above criteria.

Just been through all this, the dealer would not sell me a 100cc Honda Vision until he had seen my licence and the insurance company wanted a image of my licence and a copy of the paper licence, I have a cat A, a left over from my youth, if I did not have this it was a 50cc limit and a driving course which covered me for 2 years as stated as stated by others.

Ring a motorcycle training company and they will advise you correctly, there has been one reply already incorrect.i.e. 28 mph max

Wrong, wrong, wrong

I am 68 years old. When I was 16 I took my motorbike test on a 50CC Raleigh moped. The emergency stop was a man in a bus shelter shouting "boo" as loud as he could.

I was then allowed to drive any size of motorbike. I had a 650 Triumph. I went many years without a bike until 1990 and I had another one for about 2 years.

Then I got the urge to have a bike again and I purchases a Yamaha Dragstar 8 days ago. It is 650 CC. Of course I had to insure it so I filled out all the forms on line. I was very confident that my driving license would be ok. At least I was confident until the insurance form said they wanted copies of my license, and the green bit, back and front.

Have to admit that alarmed because I had spent £2300 on it and all of a sudden I realised I might have to sell it again. I have never taken a CBT course or test or anything since my moped test.

To put my mind at rest I called DVLA, gave them my name and license number and they tracked me down. No problem at all, I can drive any motorbike. Then I got word back from my insurance company that they were happy with my license.

Anybody want to take bets that I'm wrong, show us your money.

Yes Chris but not too bad if you have a missus who is petite

50cc serves our purpose we do not want to travel miles just use it to explore when parked up. It is also light and fits on the back of the Motorhome.

Thanks for all the replies it was just the "Full moped licence" i needed clarifying as it was on insurance quote. It did ask elsewhere if a passenger carried but the "full moped or provisional licence" is confusing

Here we go which would you put if you had both and wanted a provisional for one and a full moped for another, if you get what I mean? could the insurance say you filled in this form wrong?
