We plan to retire next year and wish to travel. The idea of a MH. seems a good idea.
Do you need a special license to drive a MH?
What sort of fuel consumption can you expect?
Can anyone reccomend a 2 berth quality MH ( max 60k )
Thanks in antisipation

Firstly, a warm welcome to MotorhomeFUN!!
Lots and lots of great info can be found here...DO envy you by the way!!
We have a Hymer S520...no special licence required at all, just nerves of steel as you negotiate the narrow country lanes that the sat nav sends you down (you know, the ones with grass growing down the middle??!) :ROFLMAO:
The type of MH you want depends entirely on your own ideas etc....there is the Malvern Show coming up and there will be lots on show. Or visit some of the big dealers, sit in various ones, imagine yourselves living in them and ask lots of questions....best of luck, bet you will never regret it!! Ana xx

where do you wish to travel, just the two of you or do you have a dog or three, when do you want to travel, all year round, in the Sun, snow, both, how long for in a single trip. Remember you lose nearly 20% of the value of a new van over the first two years, a nearly new van will have already taken that loss and may have extras fitted. Do you intend to wild camp or sit on a site with all amenities electric hookup etc. All these questions and more need answers before anyone could recomend a van. Enjoy your search. Remember most people sell their first van quite quickly as they find they would really like something else, some other layout or feature. Why not buy an older van to try out and refine your needs list, that way you will no lose so much when I comes to selling it. Prices are falling, its a buyers market, save some of the £60k for extras.

We are still at the 'investigation stage' and have taken all this advice and more, and Wildman is quite right when he sayes visit as many places as you can, sit in them etc - we've even been known to rush across to MH owners as they sit innocently on a grass verge having a cuppa, we pump them for info and have never found anyone who isn't keen to talk about thier 'baby' and the lifestyle.
We're actually selling our holiday villa in Turkey to buy a MH instead, because we've actually got bored being in one place for every holiday - which for us is about 3 months a year - at least with a motorhome you can follow your fancy.
In fact having listened to advice we've already changed our minds on a particular model more than once, and the best advice we were given was 'not to buy anything bigger than you really need'.

Hi Harriet

If you choose a motorhome that weighs over 7.5 tons you realy need an HGV licence

From 3.5 tons to 7.5 tons you need a C+E car licence

Under 3.5 an basic car licence

Hope this helps :thumb:

Hi Tony

Nor me I doubt as the last thing I am planning is to get an RV over 7.5 tons.

I know its been done to death but it really is odd isn't - you need to get an HGV license to drive a vehicle thats not an HGV and has a car MOT. Wonder how the courts would explain that one :roflmto::roflmto:

Hi Harriet and welcome:welcome:
We are newbies too and bought an old Frankia to see if we liked MHoming
We like the van's layout with a pull down bed, lounge layout, winter insulation, We don't like lack of worktop space,no oven or grill.
I guess it depends on whether you want to tour in the winter (Insulation), do a lot of cooking or baking (oven), socialise with a lot of friends (layout and comfort of seats). go down narrow lanes, have a lot of sports equipment ( skis, surf boards, fishing rods).
Good luck with your hunt!
