What's the best way to get the best prices on ferry crossings on channel crossings?

I have pretty much cracked it for the car but for MH there seems to be no deals at all. Is there any Carnet schemes? and what about open returns etc.

Tescos vouchers are good but lead times are not.

We always use the tunnel because of the dog.
There is no significant difference between a return and two singles, so we book the return trip a day or so ahead from France and so are not restricted to coming back on a particular date. For some reason the crossing from France to England is usually a bit cheaper than going the other way.

Just booked Dover Calais with dfds £40 each way for travel in June until early July. It's even cheaper if you go about 5 in the morning or late evening.

Unfortunately, the date falls into the Spring Bank Holiday Week, this probably makes it a lot dearer.

We used P & O for our camper one way over on 2nd Dec. last year and it was £38.00 ferry time 4 p.m., brought a one way ticket back in January through My Ferry for 28th Feb. and it was £43.00 - this is for a camper 24' long and 3.4 metres high, ferry time 12 p.m.

Sōd this I've just booked Le Shuttle - why? Because I'm worth it

Why is it worth it to you?

For me I quite like the long crossing as it gives a break from driving for a while. I suppose if you are local to the channel ports (<50 miles) the tunnel might be attractive.

We're in Stamford. It's a 160 mile drive.

Travelling to Folkstone after the evening rush hour means a nice easy drive.

In the morning we board the train, and can do a long stint at the wheel without it becoming a drag.

I've tried a few different options including 450 miles in a day with an hour and a half on the ferry. It's not for me.

DFDS via Topcashback

We always use DFDS to Dunkirk and book as early as possible via Topcashback. We prefer this route and overnight both ways at Dunkirk terminal.

Pluck up courage ? The pace is slower, the fuel is cheaper, the roads are deserted, no maximum time in super-market car-parks, absence of yellow lines, park almost anywhere, Motorhomes welcome and so on.
Doctors should send people there who have stress, it would just melt away.

You live so close, how wasteful,

A lot depends on where you are going. I always travelled DFDS Dover/Dunkirk if I was travelling north and Dover/Calais if travelling south, as it was always the cheapest with a long rig. Have just got a price of less than £400 Santander to Poole in May when we return from Benidorm. This is for a 10 metre outfit with cabin. No way can I pretend to transit France and then get a Calais/Dover crossing for that sort of money.

Avoid travelling at weekends and obvious peak times like Bank Holiday Mondays, be prepared to board at an early time, and book well in advance before the prices start going up - I usually book in January, and even then the prices increase hourly.

Having mentioned Bank Holidays, it's worth remembering that Good Friday isn't a public holiday in France, so it's an ideal day to go hurtling south from the ferry port with a view to bagging an aire slot first thing on Easter Saturday. We did that last year, driving from Calais down to Futuroscope's aire near Poitiers on Good Friday, then across to the coast at La Palmyre first thing Saturday morning. NW England to the Gironde Estuary in less than 48 hours, and no broken speed limits.

just booked DFDS Dover/Calais for July £44 up to 10m code is EECON

I just booked and using that code (thanks for sharing) made absolutely no difference what so ever. It was £50 with and without.

Yeap we too have recently booked with DFDS EECON means nothing, as it is the same without using that code. I have emailed with DFDS over discounts etc., as we got a good deal last year £48 return! but afraid nothing doing this year, they say they have No plans to offer any discounts for motorhomes in the coming months. But to be fair £44-£49 each way (depending on travel times) is still not bad.

We booked Dover/Calais (june) Calais/Dover (July) for £93 and that was for a 34" RV

For those who aren't aware - if you are 60 or over you qualify for a 20% discount on the already very cheap fares on LDLines/DFDS Newhaven/Dieppe crossing. (takes 4 hours) :thumb:
