This has got to be one of the worst jobs there is

This is how it was a year ago and it only got worse so time to bite the bullet and sort it.
I kept putting it off because it is so difficult to access and damn awkward
CA_03031316374043-M.jpg

First I cleaned everything with resin polish and pulled out all the loose sealant before cleaning the area to be applied with Sika 205 cleaner Aktivator
Then I applied a generous bead of Sika 221 and removed the excess with a spare nozzle that I'd cut to a profile with point each side. The points left two grooves in the sealant which would make it easier to remove any sealer outside of the points once set.

Here cleaning up next day
IMG_0085-M.jpg

The existing sealant that was still sound I left in place and just feathered the new stuff into it

Overall not perfection but I'm pleased with my efforts

Maybe if I had a tressels and a youngman board and laid on my back perhaps otherwise far too much like hard work in comparisson. Just maintaining the correct distance around two curves is bad enough if you could do it on a bench. I think you're having a Giraffe :ROFLMAO:
Got any piccys ::bigsmile:

Actually Terry now my mind is in gear (champagne night) yes you are correct! I could have used masking tape without bothering too much about the line as it would have taken less time to remove what was outside of my lines (although that only took half an hour including polishing off) :thumb:

Don't beat yourself up about it -::bigsmile:-I think you made a very nice job of it -- :thumb::thumb:
I have had yrs of experience of sealing windows both with masking tape and free hand -if you intend to smooth it off then it;s a lot easier with the tape :winky: I say again -nice job :thumb:::bigsmile:

Would have taken you five mins to mask up a min to run sealant another to smooth with wet finger and another to pull off both tapes at once :thumb:::bigsmile: Same result :thumb: you got there in the end :winky::thumb:

How did you reach the middle? I did mine this morning as well as most of the other joints all over the place, but I could only do as far as I could reach on the overcab bit.

Folded mirrors in and grabed the mirror upper arm pivot point to assist mounting the tyre :roflmto:

Not sure if you've seen them but i have a sealant kit that has all different silicone profiles which eliminates the surplus that would need to be taken off. A decent gun also helps with a better application.

I use a power pro gun and have found it the best one I've come across in years

You must be a flaming gymnast, I try that with general cleaning of the overcab. It leaves me with one hand to work with and usually a few pulled muscles.:ROFLMAO:

I will be attempting to do this sometime this week. I am not very good at diy so I will us masking tape and hope for the best. Any other tips. Do you have to totally clean out the old silicone?

Hi wipe it clean/dry- then mask up as close/1/8 inch to original top and bottom /apply sealant/smooth with wet finger /grab both tapes and pull cleanly -if it pulls sealant carefully smooth it down or let it dry depending on how good you feel about smoothing ::bigsmile: If you smoothed it right you should be able to pull tapes without it pulling on the seal :winky:

Please don't mention or use silicone it is not a suitable product for this job and I'm sure your existing sealant will be a polyurethane adhesive sealant like mine was. As I said in my first post remove all the loose stuff , clean and de grease the area and then use a larger bead that will encompass the old secure product and leave it looking smart.

This is an example of the spare nozzle I cut to a profile to drag across the applied sealant

Techno - have you checked the large seal across the top of your Rapido for damage? When we had a Rapido 709F I was up there sorting something or other and found that there were some 'slits' in the sealant, fortunately it was before they were too deep and hadn't let any water in, so I cleaned the seal up and re-coated it with some Sikaflex - best to check yours.

This is the best £10 I ever spent for all those silicon and grouting jobs around the house
I have just resealed all the joints on my 4 year old Autotrial and they look better than new...
Mind you that wasn't hard to do :ROFLMAO: (bottom right hand side shape was good for the overcab joint)

Next job Mel
It's not too bad but does need renewing this year. I also need to replace offside rear quarter eventually due to a reversing mishap in France

many many years! since I was a kid
you're a better man than me Andy, you made an awkward job look simple. Mind you if i tried to pull myself up onto the tyre using the wing mirror it would no doubt fall off in my hand along with part of the door frame:ROFLMAO:
