Couple of days ago I had to do a serious emergency stop in my 2003 ducato based M/H.
Today it suddenly dawned on me there was no ABS.
My question therefore is, was ABS an option on ducatos back then or is mine just not working. :Eeek:
I have been searching the net but cannot seem to find the answer.
I have checked the dash lights and the ABS warning light does not illuminate when the ignition goes on (indicating ABS probably is not fitted) but thats not to say the bulb hasn't been removed!

Probably not fitted, our 2005 Ducato didn't have it either.

if the ABS isnt working then the dashboard warning light will be lit.....it usually says ABS across it.

No warning light, no ABS fitted........or someone removed the bulb because the ABS was faulty.
It has no effect on brakes if it fails, other than they may lock under emergency braking.

Just read the end of your post again and bulb removal seems a likely option as it should light on pre start ignition key.

Reluctor ring

Have a look at the brake disc and see if you can find a reluctor ring. They are available to buy as spares for vehicles from around 2002.

ABS may have been a option at that time. :thumb::thumb:

It should look something like below

Easier
Have a look under the bonnet
If you've not got a bulky piece of metal with lots of pipes in and out near the master cylinder then you don't have ABS

As an example

If it is the ABS, assuming you have one, they can as often as not be repaired but choose a company which offers a lifetime guarantee. They do exist. Can elaborate if needed.

It could be that if you were good on the pedal and the road was dry that it did not need to intervene. You can test the modulator by hitting the brakes in reverse in my experience.

Edit
I don't mean test that it is working correctly! but that it works at all.

I would be surprised if a 2003 vehicle didn't have ABS but always happy to be surprised!

Try Techno's suggestion or an emergency stop at low speed on a muddy patch, we are surrounded by them at the moment if you need suggestions where to do this test. But don't go too slow as ABS systems switch off below a set speed.

As I said probably not fitted, all the dashes have the lamp symbol whether it has abs or not.
The official way to tell is if it has a load sensing valve on the rear, connected to the axle by a rod, if so then no ABS.

The simple test here is. ..
Did your emergency stop result is you skidding.. Did your wheels lock.
If they did.. Abs not fitted or not working.
If they didn't then it wouldn't have been required (or it was working).

Its probably not fitted to your motorhome, if it is you will find the ABS unit just behind the front bumper on the passenger side.

Yes it was a long skid on a wet dual carrageway which nearly resulted in three skid marks!
Just for the record I was driving with poor weather in mind (France) and the car in front of me slammed the brakes on (actually stopped) to give way to another car entering the carriageway. Luckily the driver saw me bearing down on them and made a hasty pull away!
