Some friends we know are wanting to hire an RV and tour around
California. It is to be a dream holiday for themselves and their family so I presume they'll be wanting to rent a decent size RV. Their daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumour 5 years ago and this is to be a dream trip for her as despite all the odds, she has responded superbly to her treatment and her prognosis is very good!
They have asked me if I know anyone who has done similar as they are wanting advice on the best and most cost effective way to book this trip. I'm not sure how long they plan to be away but I wouldn't imagine it would be for more than 4 - 6 weeks! Apparently, from I can gather It is all a bit complicated to organise and they would benefit from chatting to anyone who had done it or look at any websites where people could advise them of the best places to stay etc. They want to plan it all in advance as they are hoping to go in July of next year and apparently all the campsites get booked up very quickly. They can book flights and RV hire through Virgin but they think it could work out cheaper to book them separately. I think they are looking at booking the motorhome with Cruise America (who I think Virgin use anyway)
Any info or advise from anyone who has done similar will be much appreciated by this lovely family.
Thanks in advance.
Sue

Greetings Mo,

As a couple who have just returned from a trip to New Zealand (I know it's not the USA but hear me out)

The one thing we do remember when it came to booking the motorhome part of the trip is to check, check and check again with the Companies that are offering the deals.

We found that there was a lot of, I'll call them resale agents out there. They look like they are the ones with the motorhome but on doing research what we could have ended up doing was booking with a clever bit of jiggerypokery that would have meant that we were paying for someone to take our booking and passing our details on electronically at vast profit to the genuine renters. You wouldn't have been aware of it (and neither would the motorhome firm)
In one case we could have paid over £4000 when we could done the deal with the genuine Co. for just over £2000. It's a minefield out there.:Eeek:
I suppose what I'm saying is, just because it says (for instance) Britz on the site, don't assume you're dealing with Britz.

Yes , we have had three RV trips in the USA, the first was SanFrancisco, Tahoe, Yosemite ,Hoover, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and LA. 3 weeks
Then New York up the east coast to Cape Cod Boston , Adirondack , Toronto and Niagara 3weeks
The last one in 2012 we did a one way delivery (at reduced rates) from Chicago , StLouis, Memphis, Tulsa, Amarillo, Alberquerque , North Rim Grand Canyon , into Utah then Las Vegas . 4 weeks
We have hired from www.elmonte.com. www.cruiseamerica.co.uk. and www.themotorhomeXperts.com , the last two links are the same company who specialise in RV hire and in the spring offer one way deals from Cruise America who have new RVs that need delivering from source to the base hire depot, at advantageous rates.
If you need any more info please pm me

On the last trip we booked our own flights and accomodation although there are travel agents who will do the whole thing for you.

a member on sister site RVOC did this on the cheap.

They enquired with the RV manufacturers regarding delivery of new RVs.

They were accepted and took charge of a brand new RV somewhere near the east coast and had 3 weeks to get it to the west coast....Chicago to LA i think.

50% reduction on what would be the usual hire fee and no set route...just had to get to the drop off on time.
Had the option of extending the trip at a reduced rate for the extra time.

To go next july is more than enough time to get sorted.

Guess what.....just read Larry's post above. :Doh::Blush:
