beginner, I don't like the newbie term
Sorry quite a long story.
My Motorhome insurance expired in Dec. The MH has been on my own drive since. I am moving to Ireland on 21 of March and have a quote for insurance from Ireland (Very reasonable) but this only allows me to have my MH on UK plates for a Max of 28 days before I have to re register it in Ireland. I think I need at least a week the other side to register it there.
I currently have a private plate on the MH which I want to put on retention but I need to have insurance according to DVLA, the MH is taxed and has a valid MOT.
Now whilst I probably could just about do the insurance with the Irish company I am not sure if DVLA will accept it and whether it will give them enough time to process the retention cert and get it back to me before I go.
I am therefore thinking of getting some insurance here and now but I only want it for a month or so, has anyone heard of any companies that provide cover for less than 12 months?
I know I could take out a full years cover pay by DD then cancel the DD when I no longer needed the UK insurance but technically the insurance company could pursue this and ask for the entire amount that I owe and I don't want to take the chance.

Thanks in advance.

Aviva do short term 1-28 day cover for motorhomes. I've used them several times when I've sold vehicles and are the only short term cover provider that puts you on the MID (if you order cover at 24 hours before) meaning you can tax a vehicle.

I don't think its particularly cheap, but probably cheaper then buying a 12 month policy and then having the hassle of refunding it, admin fees etc - even if you are within your 14 day cooling off period.

https://aviva.shortterminsurance.co.uk/yourdetails.aspx

If you are putting a plate on retention, you don't need insurance of the vehicle is SORN - but I guess you need road tax to take it to Ireland.

Greetings,

Gleaned from this wonderful Interweb thingy I'm typing on;

Tempcover.com
aviva.co.uk/short-term-car-insurance
theaa.com
insure4aday.co.uk
Broken Link Removed

I'm NOT guaranteeing that any of them will take on your Motorhome but they're in the business of making money and I'm sure one of them will see the reward that is in it for them.

Good Luck.

Thanks for both replies. I did have a conversation with DVLA, where they suggested I declare the MH off the road then I did not need insurance but they also then said I should return the tax disc for a refund. I explained that I would need the tax when taking the MH to the ferry, simple get a new tax disc. Not really the best solution seeing as I would need to get a minimum of 6 months even if I could send it back for a refund of the un used bit.

I might have a chat with Aviva as they are providing the cover through a broker in ROI.

to retain the number plate you have to have EITHER insurance or a sorn declaration in force.

If its on SORN you dont need insurance...unless its kept on a public road.

In which case he would be breaking the law as you cannot keep an untaxed vehicle on the public road!

My fault and my naivety but getting my insurance sorted has been difficult and all because I tried to save a few quid.

Old insurance ran out in December not worried as the van is parked off the road and I thought I would get insurance when I needed it and save the odd months premium. Then I decided to get my insurance in Ireland (moving there soon) as it is a lot cheaper and I could use the van here for 28 days before I took to Ireland, then realised I want to keep my personal plate, but to do so I need insurance to put it on retention. Thought I would do this using Irish sourced insurance but on reading the terms of the Irish insurance I need to get the van professionally inspected which is difficult as it involves taking the vehicle on the road and it appears it must be tested by an Irish approved garage. Also concern about submitting the application for retention cert and getting it back in time from the DVLA.

So tried a few companies that specialise in short term insurance (thanks for the suggestions) Aviva wanted £390 for 28 days and an excess of £1000, that is much more than I used to pay on annual insurance, I did check some others but they hurt too. No doubt being computers they assume I am hiring a van hence the sting. I did try and ring a few direct but no joy there either.

I have now found a solution not great but it works for me. Get insurance (Frank Pickles) for a year £180 then re insure once in Ireland cancel with Frank but pay in full as it just ain't worth trying to get any money back after a month I only get £10% of my original fee back.

This has been painful, wish I'd just paid in December.

This is what I would do:

1.) Declare your vehicle SORN online, since this is effective immediately:
https://www.gov.uk/register-sorn-statutory-off-road-notification

2.) At the end of the process, if you want to return your tax disc for a refund you can download a V14 form: https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-tax-disc-refund-form-v14

Now you vehicle is SORN, you must not drive it on the road.

3.) You can now (same day) apply for retention of your private plate:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/209585/V317_140313.pdf

You do not need to provide insurance because the above form states that it is required if you want to tax the vehicle. You don't want to yet - because it's SORN.

If you need to tax your vehicle you also need to include:
• An ‘Application for a tax disc’ (V10) or an ‘Application to tax a
Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV)’ (V85).
• A certificate of insurance or cover note.
• The appropriate fee for the tax disc.

4.) You will get back from the DVLA:

a.) New V5 Certificate with (most likely) your original UK registration.
b.) Retention Certificate for your UK private plate
c.) Notification of SORN
d.) Refund of your tax (probably later).

5.) I would check online that the SORN has been transferred to the vehicles registration number and that the MOT has also been transferred using the DVLA website:
https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax
https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

6.) Now you can go and buy 24/48 hours of cover from Aviva, and tax your motorhome at the post office. Make sure you take out the cover a few days in advance, so that Aviva update the Motor Insurance Database - since the post office no longer check your certificate.
https://aviva.shortterminsurance.co.uk/yourdetails.aspx

7.) Within that 24/48 hour period (or whatever you get your temp cover for), drive your motorhome to Ireland.

7.) Once safely in Ireland and insured for the irish provider, you can send off a further V14 form for a refund of your UK road tax: https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-tax-disc-refund-form-v14

There is probably a flaw in the above somewhere (most likely the DVLA ) but that's what I would do. Sophie retained loads of private plates when she worked for Mercedes, so did steps 1-4 all the time without any issues. :thumb:
