Saw an article in the Sunday Times yesterday about Isle de Noirmoutier an Island off the Vendee coast in Western France.

Has anybody been and have and recommendations or suggestions as it looks a good place for some sun and beaches later in the year and short drive from St Malo.

We've been there. there's a huge Aire/coach park at Noirmoutier town where there's a small supermarket, lots of shops and seafood restaurants. There is a great aqua park on the island as well. It's not a huge island & it's quite flat. There is a bridge to get to it or a tidal road if you get the timing right. We found that there's not enough to keep us there for a long time, but everyone's different. I would certainly recommend a visit.

Personally preferred the Ile de Re , lovely island couple of aires & plenty of campsites, ideal for cycling .

Isle de Noirmoutier

Yes great place to visit for a couple of days. Market Sunday AM Noirmoutier worth a visit. Didn't use the massive Aire but a camping site right at the north end of the island. Can be very very busy with MH's at week-ends because of close proximity of Nantes. As already said Isle de Re is also worth a visit.

Hi we've been here:

and here:

Our preference is the latter & we love it. We made friends with some French fisherman who stayed & fished for the season, they gave us surplus shell-fish & we argued about the merits of malt whisky, cognac & calvados & after several 'tastings' we all agreed they were great!!!

I remember our TomTom app on me iPhone showing me a beautiful picture of the sea covering the low-tide bridge & saying 'Go straight ahead for 3 miles' that made us laugh!

It's one of those micro-climates-we had great weather in June & a short haul from St. Malo when we chose to afford that!

We have stayed at camping Indigo twice for a week each time and loved it. We collected shellfish most days and washed and cooked them. We flew kites on beach, cycled all over the place and I had Petanque lessons from a French champion :thumb:
We'd go back any time,as we would also with Isle de Re-we have yet to 'do' Oleron, but it's on the list.

Île de Noirmoutier

Our French club has a rally on the island twice a year, at times to suit the tides, each spring and autumn. The camp site "le Clair Matin" is across the salt marshes from the town of Noirmoutier at Bois de la Chaise, plage des Sableaux (GPS 46 59 54N 2 13 23W [deg, min, sec used]). The club goes for the "peche à pieds" = fishing on foot, or shellfish gathering.

From the camp site it is possible to walk or cycle into the town, either along a sea wall (jetée Jacobsen on Google Earth) or across the salt marshes (starts off as the Chemin de Ribandon). It is a lovely area to explore on foot or by cycle. Our little dog loves the walks she gets whilst we are there and sleeps soundly all night.

If you want further info just pm me.

We are enjoying a sunny few days at indigo campsite on the island . Only opened Thursday and was very busy Friday to sunday now very quiet again. Despite the busy-ness we love the location right on the dunes and the long beach js just lovely. We rented bikes and did the big circle taking in the Sunday market - fab.
It's a five star campsite and the only one we've been to where the water was too hot in the shower and had to turn it down!

There's a long strip of land between the salt marshes and the sea inlet which is lovely to cycle.
