Hi

I have recently retired from work and looking to get more value from my motorhome. National Trust have recently sent me a discounted membership renewal. We used to belong when we visited in our car.
We have a 7.5m motorhome and was wondering if parking was a problem in N.T. car parks.

Other peoples experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi Stuart,i think with the NT it is just a question of phoning the site you are going to visit to see if the entry road and the car park is motorhome freindly, some are definately not:whatthe:the handbook will sometimes give some information about it but i would definatley ring.enjoy your retirement:thumb:

Agree with Brian on that - some but not all NT sites have a coach parking area an where they do you should be able to use that facility if there are not too many coaches due. Phoning ahead is the answer. Once you are a member you will have their hand book so you will have all the site contact numbers in there.

We've been to plenty in ours and never been unable to park, but I'm sure there may be a few difficult ones. Generally speaking they have gone to some trouble to ensure access for everyone. It has occurred to me that many would make magnificent Aires, but can't imagine they'd entertain the idea.

There was a thread on here a year or two back - there was a chap who worked for NT and had a motorhome all decked out to promote NT and travelled around shows etc. Cannot remember his tag but have not seen him on here for a long time - he was going to approach NT to look at the possibilities of Aires or 5 van sites on NT properties. Never saw a conclusion to that. Any one any updates on that ???

We are members of N.T. and visit a large number each year ,often in the m/h (7.5m) and have never had a problem. Some of the acess roads can be quite narrow so just need to take care.
If you try to arrive early in the day the car parks are usually not too crowded so you can pick your spot.

That'll be Ben (JurrasicCoastin)......Broken Link Removed. Looks like he's still doing his mobile promotion in the motorhome (Twitter).

I think the closest the NT got to doing anything was opening up a few sites to overnighting a couple of years ago on 2 specific dates. Don't know how successful they were. A bit too organized and expensive for what people are looking for on this forum.

There are some campsites owned & run by NT & some on NT land run by others but Aires style stopovers would be brilliant in parkland or car parks! Perhaps if all us Funsters email & ask both head Office & properties someone in NT might consider it?! They wouldn't have to do much to make it possible especially if existing car parks with toilets (as waste & water plumbing there) would allow overnight parking. See https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/holidays/camping/ not all these take motorhomes but a few do

Visited a few NT houses in an 8.5m MH and can't praise the staff enough. On couple of occasions as we arrived a staff member/volunteer was on hand to advise the best place to park. At one house the exit road was advised to be difficult so had a golf cart escort to exit through the entrance drive.

As normal if you don't plan and check access roads using phone or street view then common sense must prevail.

Good luck and enjoy your NT membership with your MH.

Greetings,

For the benefit of all on this Forum may I suggest;

Have a look at joining the NATIONAL TRUST FOR SCOTLAND. Particularly if you are a couple, and one of you are, shall we say, not in the first flush of youth. It will also handsomely pay if you are a single senior.

From their own sites;
National Trust Single £55.00 (currently on Offer £41.62) Joint £92.00 (CoO £69.00)
NT For Scotland Single £39.60 Single Senior £29.40 Senior Couple(one over 60),£47.40

The National Trust DO beat the NTFS in one category (at the moment ) and that is a One parent family but that only because they have their offer on at the mo. and there's only pennies in it. Their current offer relies on you joining by DD and forgetting to cancel it.

You do not have to be a resident of Scotland (until that is Alex Salmond wins the ref.) and your membership entitles you to the same free entry into the NT car parks and house etc south of the border.:thumb:

Regards

Thanks Neil - sadly it seems he no longer inhabits this forum - his last visit was January 2011. I would guess he had little success putting ideas over to NT for Aires or small campsites - great shame - they could have use that as a sales drive for new members.

We've been to plenty in ours and never been unable to park, but I'm sure there may be a few difficult ones.

Overbeck's, near Salcombe.....don't do what I did and visit it during the summer holidays :Eeek:

The main car park is pretty small (it was full so I had to park on the road as advised). But the real problem is the access road to it. It's narrow in places, and the parts that aren't have cars parked up so that long stretches are effectively single lane. Add the fact that the recommended route combines this with some hairpin turns....

....result: queues meeting each other head-on. Nobody able to back up more than a couple of car-lengths. Vehicles using driveways to sort out the gridlock.

I still don't know how I squeezed past a Mini without hitting it or the wall next to me. And I now know what an overheating clutch smells like

As we're going to the NEC we're going to join and look at some NT properties whilst we're there so I'd already been having a shuftie at the NT costs myself and thought I'd correct the above prices as the NT for Scotland is even cheaper: :thumb:

Nat Trust England:
Single £41.62
Joint £69.00
Family £72.75
Senior - you have to ring them and be able to prove you have had membership for at least 5 years in the last 10!

Nat Trust Scotland:
Single £37.50
Joint/Family £65.25
Senior Single £27.75
Senior Couple £44.65

NTScot Membership

There is also another benefit to joining either the NT or the NT for Scotland as they have a reciprocal agreement with some other countries' organisations, most a fair way away but it does include the Netherlands which could be useful!
