Replace top cap with respect to correct position of inlet outlet, taking a photo or marking postion before dismantling is a good idea
refit securing ring and assembly tool and tighten to 30nm

Can be sourced for sub £18 delivered

It is inconceivable that the housing can be damaged and leak if this tool is used.

Thanks for a very informative post. I always do my own service but have not tackled the 2.3 250 yet.I see that the whole unit has to be removed from van (new one on me ) is that easy? To dark outside to look tonight but will investigate tomorrow

After Fiat alleged Professional service left me twice with leaking filters (both times it was ok and then leaked like a sieve when the engine was hot and was restarted after a few minutes) I got the filter housing tool off eBay for about £17 and used correctly not had a problem since.

The first time, RAC advised that the wrong O ring had been used. The whole unit has to come off - easy to disconnect - by un bolting it.:thumb:

Thanks for putting the pictures up

Well done.............As someone who has suffered from a cracked /failed filter
I know what a swine this can be if it fails.

I asked my local fiat specialist if they had a proper tool and the guy said we are experienced we don't need one.

I have told him .......never to touch it ...as I had a new one put on after the old one split.

So how often should this filter be changed ?

The copy of a Fiat 250 service schedule that I have indicates 25/28k depending on which engine and marked as EVERY SERVICE however most motorhomes take three or four years to do that mileage.
I am only doing mine now because despite having receipts for work done from the previous owner I cant be sure the garages ever did change it especialliy as it hasn't leaked :ROFLMAO:

I wish I could edit my posts instead of adding stuff later  it's so out of sync for reference.
I would have said that the normal price you will be charged for a filter element is £40 to £50 including VAT plus labour
So buying your own filter for region £22 and the tool region £18 and your own labour FREE is a no brainer.
Now obviously this is not for everyone, each to their own and their wallet.
A good reputable mechanic is worth his weight in gold! if you've got one and happy that's great :thumb:

Emergency fix

Having experienced a leaking fuel filter while in Germany, I was lucky i had just arrived on a camp site and was able to source and fit a new filter.
So i now carry a short piece of rubber tube and two jubilee clips and in an emergency i can by pass the filter to keep going to garage

Hi Andy

Had the filter seal dump £50 of diesel up the A14 before the wife noticed and pulled over

AA man refused to touch the job and then had us wait 6 and 1/2 hours to tow us away.

Recovery man dragged the tow bar down the tarmac while loading/unloading .

I had the parts/correct tooling at home to service the unit, it took me 5 mins to remove it and 5 mins to put it back, why ho why didn't the AA have a go, is beyond me.

Any way, complaint lodged with the AA and van running OK

So.... a million thanks for this brilliant article

And a question, I intend to carry a spare now, some have black tops and some have green tops some are on ebay for £89, some say original part and are £160 what the difference?

Thus. The price difference is down to how greedy the sellers are.

Mine has done nearly 2k since servicing it in February without issue. The one in my guide was a brand new unit so I could photograph it without getting dirty hands.
