My wife and I (and 2 young children!) purchased our first motorhome last week and will pick up next Saturday. I would really appreciate your help and advice as to what 'essentials' I should get in the cover. We only intend to stay within Ireland for the next 12 months. Where is the best place to get insurance? As always sincere thanks with your help.:):):)

20 years (unless you count my dads VW which makes it 52 years with a few gaps!!)
Hi and welcome.
There are many specialist mh insurers out there so you shouldnt have trouble finding one that suits you. Just remember that you will have more inside it than a car so you want contents to be insured as well. Obviously only you will know exactly what you need but if you do a search on here there are many threads covering the subject.
All the best.

Hi we are with saga, but you need to be over 50! Others use comfort or caravan club, try in the search box above on the left, good luck and congrats. Good times ahead for you all:thumb:

Insurance..

Hi,
recently asked the same question(as a newbie), a lot of Funster's recommended Comfort Insurance. I tried them and they were very competative and very helpful..

I'm with safegaurd and before that used Frank Pickles for a few years.Never had to make a claim so can't say how good they would be, but both companies have been helpful each time I've dealt with them.

Your location is shown as Ireland, is this Northern Ireland or Eire as the advice would differ for each country.

Hi,
Just to add another option, we are with Stavely Head insurance. They specialise in commercial and Motorhomes and are very competitive. 0800 023 7197 is their phone number.

Good luck :thumb:

Hi, and 'congratulations' on your new 'baby'! ::bigsmile:

Insurance - things to consider:

No claims bonus - if you have another vehicle (car?) which has your NCB on it, therefore you cannot use it for your MH insurance too I'm afraid, you will have to build it up gradually.

Legal cover - yes, this doesn't add much to the premium but can save a lot of hassle/grief if you need to useit.

Breakdown/recovery - some insurance companies including this automatically in their quotes, whilst others charge for it separately, make sure that if you take it out that it covers your MH for all eventualities you are likely to need it for, eg some only do road-side assistance, whereas others do home start etc.

Excess - this is again something to consider carefully, you might be tempted to have a high excess to keep the premium down, but it could cost you dear if you go too high with it.

Previous vehicle claims - even if these were in your car, motorbike, scooter etc they still have to be declared. If you are having a second driver on the policy then they need to declare any too.

Contents - check your home insurance policy as you may find that a lot of the stuff you'll use in the MH is covered as 'personal effects away from the home' so there's no point in duplicating the insurance.

Greetings,

Sorry to disagree with such an august member but Minx, you are wrong on the above point.

As recently as last Saturday I insured our newly bought first motorhome with Safeguard.

They have 'mirrored' my NCB of many years car use and, following a discussion they had with the Halifax Insurance Co. my car Insurance provider,(who, incidentally, wouldn't provide me with the evidence direct) they have given me 9 yrs NCB
