Any advice welcome ......
We have had our 2008 roller team 700 for 18 months bought from a dealer but being newbies we didn't realise how important these hab checks were, they provided no report on selling the van to us and we didn't know to ask.
We have had our 1st check and I'm gutted that the bunk above and the side behind the driver has reported 85% damp

Before I start crying can anyone help with what to do surely this damp has not just appeared in the last 18 months ????

I am yet to ring them cause I'm not sure of all the facts or how to handle it any advice welcome

They did not provide any hab check paper work when we bought it though

I feel your pain having just gone through a similar experience. Mine was bought privately with a habitation check so you can imagine the shock when we had readings of up to 90% damp a year after we bought it. Luckily for us it appeared the original damp check had been altered from a failure cross to a tick and the diagram sheet was missing so we sought advice from CAB specialist support. They advised that the seller was potentially guilty of misrepresentation amongst other things and to cut a long story short after meeting with the person that sold us the vehicle they were persuaded to buy it back to avoid us going to Court. In your case does the trader have a website that details if all vehicles are sold with an up to date check, can you remember what you were told at the time you bought it? I would phone CAB for advice as even if it didn't have an up to date check it has to be fit for purpose and it is unlikely it would have gone from passing 18 months ago to such a high reading now (this is what we were told when ours failed which is what alerted us to check the original damp check). Your case is different to ours and the rules for traders should be stricter than private sales so I would definitely advise getting further advice. I wish you luck as it is a horrible shock when this happens. If it is possible that it could go from passing a check to producing readings that high 18months later then you may just have to get it repaired and put it down to experience, a horrible learning curve I know!! We were told that last years heavy snow and freezing weather would not have helped our damp problem so whether this has escalated yours and where you stored it will have a bearing :Sad:

It may not be as dear as you think as we had extensive damp in several areas and were told it would be approximately £3,000 as a guide. The year and make may have a bearing on the repair costs as we would have needed new corner roof trims which would have had to come from Italy, even if they were still available as our van was 13 years old. If they didn't give you a copy of the damp check they are unlikely to produce one now and do they do it themselves or outsource it? It might be worth trying to find out where their checks are done. Luckily for us the company that did ours remembered it failing hence our strong case. I have also seen some excellent video guides showing how you can repair a lot of it yourself, it may have been on here or a youtube video, I can't remember but someone on this forum may be able to guide you. Hopefully you will be able to resolve it with the dealer though. I wish you luck. Is it worth getting someone to call the dealer under the guise of looking for a motorhome and asking them what checks and guarantees come with a secondhand purchase so you will know what their selling spiel is so you can see if it matches their aftercare?

Damp

Have you thought of contacting the previous owners, they will be listed on your registration document?
They may of had checks done while they owned the vehicle.

Unfortunately damp can appear quickly.

When we had our habitation service/damp check a year ago it was fine but in August damp was found in the rear offside floor. That was fixed in September and the company that did it said the rest was fine.

We had this year's habitation service/damp check yesterday and signs of damp have appeared elsewhere so we are now awaiting arrangements for it to be fixed. It appears that sealant has failed in a few isolated spots and that is enough to let in water. The engineer told us that one Swift van he services was fine last year but had 90% damp readings when he checked it again recently.

I hope you are able to get your van fixed easily and for not too high a cost.

Update on the damp ........

The dealer that sold us the van don't do any damp checks when the part ex vans in therefore I have argued that there is no proof you sold us the van dry so they have agreed to fix it thank god it goes in today ......:thumb: I just hope they do a proper job .......

Good result, just make sure you get something showing all the work that has been done and a new certificate showing no damp.

Im glad your sorted:thumb:, but I think your dealer is telling porkies, damp is the first thing dealers will look for when pricing a van for px, they are expert is finding ways of reducing the px value of incoming stock.

More likly they know your on to them and fixing it is thier only way of keeping on the right side of trading standards,

Jodie, just checked the Roller Team website & they offer a 10 Year Body Integrity Guarantee & a helpline so maybe worth a call to see what they offered on your motorhome when it was new.

And they may have some helpful suggestions as well.

sorry to put a damper ( no pun intended) but Roller Team is Franchised in UK by AUTOTRAIL and they wont give a fig! been there with a bought new CI Carioca ( same manufacturer ) and they were less than helpfull.

Jodie, good luck with the work and as a damp check only costs around £35 ( just had one done independently and all is fine ) ask the dealer to get one done when the work is finished.

Sorry to hear that, regular annual hab checks are essential to pick up problems like these, buying a cheap damp meter and checking every month is also a good idea as water can get in without warning.

would your company take in a px at fair market value without doing checks on it including one for damp?

Ok the van went in for 3 weeks just got it back after they said its fixed and all readings back to 12% I have had it tested again independently and the readings are exactly the same as the first hab check ......... This is really stressing me out now what should I do I've lost trust in it all now

So you're still getting 85% damp readings? Assuming you have a report to show the readings are that high from your independent check, I'd certainly get back in touch with the dealer and insist that they PROVE that the readings are now only 12% and also to tell you exactly what work they have done to rectify the problem! However it might be worth contacting your local Trading Standards office first to see what advice they give you before you do so, so that you won't be fobbed off by any of the dealer's excuses.
