Getting to Grips with my Camera - Few shots of Polperro (1 Viewer)

I bought my Canon 600d about a year ago for the purpose of video production for work.

I've been wanting to learn how to use it as a "camera" for a while so with the other half's parents (Gaz and Julie) down here in Cornwall with us over New Year I thought it would be a good time to learn a few basics from Gary.

Very new to this but interested to hear others opinions. These are taken in Polperro last night:

Good pictures - are they HDR? If not and you are using a tripod you might want to try it for those sort of subjects, although you have done very well if you haven't used it.

The trick with HDR is to take several shots at different apertures so you get some shots with the sky correctly exposed and others with the foreground exposed correctly and then combine them using a photo editing program. You'll find lots of tutorials on the web explaining the techniques, some of which are very labour intensive, others less so, but the results can be stunning. The example below (not mine!) is probably a bit too artificial but it shows what can be done.

The exposure settings were f8, ISO 800 and 20 seconds. The first shot was f7.1, ISO 800 and 15 seconds.

Thanks - no HDR just the plain unedited, uncropped pictures exactly as taken.

I have taken several pictures of each shot (and loads of others) at different settings to see what I can do with them in Photoshop when I get a chance but wanted to concentrate on getting a reasonable photo first.

I can see this turning into a bit of a hobby

I'm not sure tbh

We blew it up as large as we could last night and it has a trail that makes it look like a meteorite but can't be sure. Looks cool though

Are you using multipoint focus points or single ?
Did you use the self timer on a tripod
Night time I use tripod with timer or remote with AF switched off and use manual focus and see up

I used a tripod with remote and manual focus set to infinity.

A promising start Dave, well done. The UFO in the second shot is probably either a plane or a meteorite, its definitely not lens flare. you'll soone be showing the grumpy one how to capture great images

Agree with Dave definitely not lens flare.
With the first one I may have been tempted to focus on the far off sign and zoomed in to check focus
2nd I would be quite happy to enter into club competition
