Omnistore Awning (1 Viewer)

Hi there,
I'm new here so treat me gently
The awning mechanism on my Autotrail 650 Apache has failed & will not fully retract it,
The repair job itself looks fairly straightforward, but i have a couple of question if someone could advise.
Does the complete awning assembly have to be removed to carry out the repair/replacement
If it does where are the mounting through bolts located that secure it to the van side??

I cant answer your removal point to repair it, but the back end of the bolts will be in your top lockers usually 3/4 along the length of the awning, I have never had to repair one (touch wood) but I would imagine an easy removal if required. Pete

Omnistor awning

Hi, this may not be much help but here goes. We have a 4.5m Omnistor awning on our van and on one occasion last summer, I could not get the thing to relocate flush with the mounting no matter how many times I rewound it. It wA the last couple of inches. The Problem was that I hadn't clipped the legs back into their channels properly. Once corrected, it worked fine.
If yours is a more serious problem, I'm sorry I can't help, but I'd be amazed if there isn't an old thread on this, so worth searching this site.

I think this is how the mechanism has got broken...the legs not correctly stowed & the awning wound in, but rather than stopping when the winding got stiff...it was just continued to be wound in & that that

I have looked today for through bolts but cannot see any, so i have to assume these are behind cabinets or covers within them, which i cant yet find

No, it got so far and wouldn't go further so I wound it back out rather than force it. Somebody came over and suggested checking how the legs were clipped in.

On a Prostor which is the new company started by the old Omnistor owners after it was sold.

You are able to alter the stor by adjusting the arms where they join the front .
It will be trial and error but move the end of one arm a small amount further along then wind it in.
If its worse than before go the other way till you get it right.

They are usually in the top cupboards some have a plastic cover square or oblong. Pete

If the awning is fitted into the correct alloy brackets (you can see them from the underside - one near each end & one or two others in between depending on awning length) you can remove the awning by simply removing the self-tapping screws in the underside of one or more of said brackets. Once the self-tappers are out the complete awning simply unhooks from the brackets without touching the fasteners that hold the brackets to the van.

replacing the gearbox can usually be done with the awning still attached to the van. unscrew and or drill out rivets on the end cap with the winder in. release the screws holding the gearbox and slide out. reassembly is a reverse procedure

it may not be damaged too bad though, unless you forced it. simply unwind fully and check for twigs, fir cones or debris and then refold and clip the legs and try again

Hi, We use ours most weekends whatever the weather,but we have to have one end lower than the other to let the rain run away,so hence the awning tends to go in except the last few inches,if you look at the clip that it is supposed to go in i am sure if you get your awning handle and just pull down the end of the awning quite hard, you will then be able to get it to retract,been doing this for years, and also as said the legs are important,the other thing to look for is if you have any bits of trees only small bits because they collect at the front of the awning over time,again it will not retract,just need to run your hand along before winding in,regards H.
