Using fridge on ferry (1 Viewer)

Hi, does anyone know if we can leave our fridge freezer on gas when we are crossing to Santander?

in a word NO bilge gasses on boats are flammable for a start

the ferry operator sometimes checks to ensure all gas bottles are off before boarding. the foul air on the car decks is pretty toxic and adding exhaust fumes from several motorhome or caravan fridges is asking for trouble

Some ferries offer EHU, not sure if that does.

I think you will find as long as the fridge door is shut when you get to the port then the contents will stay cold enough whilst on your ferry,,,,,, unless you are going to be on the ferry for a really long time.

As soon as you get out of the ferry/port switch it back on again (12v).

As you have a freezer you can use those cool box ice blocks to help keep things cool.

Depending how full (or large) your freezer compartment is you can also freeze bottles of water at home, keep them in the freezer then place them in the fridge compartment after boarding the ferry.

These will help keep the fridge cool during the voyage. You then just use your fridge as a big cool box for 30 hours or so. If you have space in the fridge you could also put some frozen bottles of water in the fridge as well to keep the temp down.

Make sure you pre cool the fridge as low as possible before leaving home, as this will also help.

Ask the deck crew for EHU..... boxes all around the car decks..

We are on the ferry for 24 hours.

lots of products will ok after 24hrs in fridge ,don't forget its very cold below deck and winter when you go..milk was ok ...we stopped at a site for night in salamanca spain second night of journey then went to supermarket just outside town and filled up with derv and fresh food

Thanks David, I am more concerned about the freezer than the fridge, we like to take meat we like which is expensive in Spain.

I read in the Brittany Ferries booklet that Gas Fridges are not allowed to be left on during the crossing.

We freeze a few large good quality water tight Tupperware containers (with the clips on the lid) full of water into very large ice cubes and leave them in the fridge for the 24 hour crossing (still inside the Tupperware). We put them in the top of the fridge.

After arrival, switch the fridge back on, the ice is a little melted but still mainly ice. Try it, on your motorhome at home before you leave

Interesting VeryOldMoIceCreamMan, when I made our booking the lady said they did not offer that facility.

This has been covered before. Running the fridge on gas introduces a naked flame on the car deck of the ferry, forbidden by international shipping regulations.

If you wish to take meat have your butcher vacuum pack the meat and load the freezer with ice packs.

Whatever, don't run the fridge.
