Hi to all from British Columbia Canada, my wife & I are flying to London in March of 2014 hoping to purchase (campervan motor home) in the area, we are originally from Swansea Wales with family still there to visit until May of 2014, our hope is to travel through Wales to Scotland then Across to Ireland, after crossing into Europe hope to spend rest of the time traveling with the hope of being back in Swansea by November for my moms 80th birthday, we hope to spend Christmas 2014 with family then back to Canada. We have already a rough outline of our travel intentions our hope is to glean from this site enough information to be better prepared, we had looked into the option of shipping our own m/h but were advised due to changing policies it would be difficult to register tax mot etc & being the larger engine not practical for economics, also looked into buy back option where they seem to charge a rather inflated price then purchase it back for between 60 to 70 percent, we would have to buy purely on the pics available paying before arrival, our hope is to purchase with the goal of selling before returning to Canada, would appreciate any advise on our ambitious attempt to fulfill number one on our bucket list, after looking via internet it seems as though the Hymer campervans hold value very well, please any two pennies worth would be great. Thanks in advance Kim & Alan.

welcome to the forum :welcomefunster:

sounds like an excellent plan to me. Hymers tend to hold their value but dont suit everyone. being left hand drive is useful for continental touring of course

on bit of advice though is values drop and vans are harder to sell in winter then surge upward in spring. if buying in march, you will pay more, sell in december and lose more. if you could get family to check and collect a purchased van for you in winter months you could save 10% or more. then advertise the van for sale with family help to sell in spring it would potentially be no loss involved

some reputable dealers would also sell your van on commission, but that will obviously cost

have you considered a mutual exchange? there are people with vans here would love to tour canada. maybe you could work something out

There are specialised companies who will inspect motor homes for a fee. They very from basic checks to full inspection including proof of ownership, previous accident damage etc.

Here are a few

.

http://www.scotiavehicleinspection.com/vehicle-inspection-services.html

https://www.dekra-expert.co.uk/vehi...l.vehicle.inspections.uk/motorhome.inspection

I have used the first myself and whilst not cheap, it is far cheaper than buying a dog of a motor home unseen.

You can also get pre sale reports which can boost the sale ability of a motor home.

hi and welcome to the site, I think hymer is the route to go as an older van in particular will have problems ironed out and still hold a good resale value. As to selling maybe family could take care of that after you have gone back home.

Welcome to Fun, If you buy a van in the UK, register it at your mothers address in Wales and use her address as yours for insurance purposes. Not sure how Canadian licencesare valid in UK but keep the van under 350kg.

If you need any help in buying a van please have a look at my website to see if anything is suitable, email Andy if you need help, addys on website.

Both Heathrow and Gatwick are reasonably close to us, 1 hour or 40 minutes and I am sure we could arrange to collect you and bring you to Robertsbridge.

Good luck

Peter

United Kingdom / Canada Licence Exchange

There is an agreement on the exchange of driver's licences between the UK and Canada.
Please be advised that unless you can provide proof that you took your Canadian test in a standard transmission vehicle, you will be granted a British licence that will allow you to drive only an automatic transmission vehicle.
Further details can be viewed on the Link Removed website, or contact the agency on 0870 240 0009.
