A few years now had a break but back with a MH now
Hi guys anyone know of a company that will insure my motorhome for business use including towing a trailer with commercial goods. I have spoken to caravan guard (who I am with at present) and they seem reluctant to give me a quote. Not sure if its because of the trailer or using the motorhome for business use. Also anyone know the best company for high mileage, caravan guard want to charge about £250 for every 5000 miles over the initial 8000 miles.

It depends to some extent on what your business is I suppose. Our motorhome is on our motor trades policy and this includes towing trailers. I insure through a motor trades specialist broker "Arthur Marsh".

Safeguard will cover your for commercial / business use.

If you are towing / over 3.5T for "hire and reward" you may need to investigate if you should have a tachograph fitted.

Thanks for the replies still investigating quotes etc. with regards to towing I have seen on the DVLA website there is no need for a tachograph if towing a trailer with a motorhome

I would be interested in a link to that (genuinely). Certainly if the trailer is being towed for personal use, then a tachograph is not required provided you are driving in accordance with your licence. The qualification for a tachograph is a train weight of over 3.5T and being used for "hire and reward".

I think the chances of you being randomly stopped are slim to none, however you only need to be passing a VOSA checkpoint I can see how a motorhome towing a trailer might be worth a look.

It is a complex and grey area. You have two options: Wing it, or try and seek written clarification from enquiries@vosa.gov.uk.

many many years! since I was a kid
its not a grey area, any vehicle over 3.5t train weight towing a trailer for business use needs to be fitted with a tachograph and comply with drivers hours regs. motorhomes used solely for social domestic and pleasure towing a trailer are exempted from tacho requirements.

its a big fine if you get caught

i was stopped towing a car trailer behind a large van and had to prove that the towing use was not business connected. plus they wanted to check i was within maximum train weights which i was but only just

Hi guys anyone know of a company that will insure my motorhome for business use including towing a trailer with commercial goods.
NFU Mutual.

Find your local branch here: http://www.nfumutual.co.uk/branches/

Business use is standard with them, but I don't know how the carriage of commercial goods will affect things. Carrying your own business goods to use yourself at your destination is one thing, deliveries is another & carrying other people's goods for payment is a whole other ball game altogether.

Anyone who uses their m'home for business use without carrying goods should certainly get a quote from them, as almost everybody else excludes business use altogether or applies a significant loading.

have to agree....

a motorhome used for professional carraige of goods becomes a goods vehicle....and that needs a tacho and will come under driving hours rules as well.

as for enquiring at DVLA/Vosa, send 4 emails then take your pick from the 4 different answers. .
