I definitely will be needing new tyres for the the front wheels but the rear look to have plenty of tread left on them.
So my question is. Is it okay to change just the front tyres.
The rear ones that I would leave on are Michelin all season tyres and I was thinking of putting Continental snow tyres on the front.

What is the general opinion on mixing tyres like this?

In answer to your question. Yes its OK just to change the front tyres. But personally I prefer to have the same tyres all round.

The Conti's may have totally different handling characteristics

Since 2012 but longer in my dreams
I see you live in France,I tend to drive faster over there as fuel is cheaper so handling does indeed come into it .Especially when you find those foreign drivers heading towards you on the wrong side of the road,I find it helps when swerving back into my holiday lane!

You could put the new tyres on the rear and rotate the old rears to the front so that they all get a chance to wear.

However, I would be a bit circumspect about having extremely different characteristic tyres on each axle. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at different brands for similar end-use tyres, even on the same axle, but might baulk at mixing full snowflake mountain tyres with an all season.

If you are going to insist on mixing, you normally get safer handling with the stickier tyres on the rear. However, if your intention is to be able to get off slippery fields, you may need to prioritise the driven axle and be on the lookout for oversteer and know how to handle it.

Don't mix. You'll regreat it in the end

Put your rear on the front and new on the rear
Then revolve all tyres every 2000 miles. In an X configuration
The front should not be left on to ware out before the rear. It makes for poor handling. Poor mpg poor maintenance

Just think how car tyres ware. Don't you rotate your car tyres ? :Eeek:

I read recently that if you are going to fit snow tyres or winter tyres, then you should fit them to the rear ( even if its front wheel drive) or on all 4 ( or 6) which is the recommended way.
Snow tyres have very different handling characteristics, having more rubber in the compound.
Or just get M&S tyres for all round use. I understand these are legal for use on the continent all year round, no snow chains legally required

this is certainly not general good advice; my car tyres are " directional " as are many these days so should not under any circumstances be revolved an an X configuration. they cannot even be rotated front to back as the rear tyres are slightly wider than the fronts.
