Still making mistakes! But they're not as costly.
Personal experience.
Just had our first three months in Europe, finishing with 6 weeks in Spain. The weather was amazing and right up till we left on November 16th, it was hot, warm in the evenings and we could sit outside most nights.
We didn't have a 'safari' room, however, we are returning to Spain on January 11th for almost four months and have already ordered said room from a dealer in Benidorm. It will be there when we arrive and we will put it up as soon as we get there.
We have spoken to soooo many people who winter in Spain and they all have privacy/safari rooms. It gets cold in the evening, plus it's a great place to socialise. :thumb:

That's our take on it.

I would say it's a necessary luxury ::bigsmile:
Sometimes it's sunny but with a cool breeze and a porch awning or privacy room means you can still have breakfast or or just sit in sun outside van :thumb:

This comes more under the heading of wants and needs in my view.

Do you NEED a safari room.................No

Is a safari room handy.........yes

It all depends on how you live, but I find mine a great benefit when it comes to keeping the wind out so one does not have to sit in the van.

One can always remove/roll up sides front or doors depending on the conditions at the time.

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
Could not live without ours, over wintering in Portugal last year we used it every day. Around 18:00hrs retire to the MH, the extra room is great for cooking, entertaining and we store the scooter in it. Takes with practice about 10 minutes to setup.

Last year it was nicknamed "The Hub" by Mel & Chris (Heyupluv) members on here and thats now what we call it.

Don't forget they are pretty heavy and take up a lot of space.

We have never found it necessary to have a safari room when wintering in Spain, but it does depend on how you winter there, many people stay in one place for months, and there for would find more space useful, but then why go in a M/H you might as wall tow a caravan down there. We did carry a safari room with us about 8 years ago but never used it as we would only stay in one place say a max of a week and did not think it was worth putting it up, also if you are on a site and you need to use your van say for shopping etc it is a pain. We have seen people on sites that drag a car all the way down to Spain, stay on a site for 3/4 months, why do this surely it would be far more sensible and cheaper to pull a caravan.

Is a safari room a luxury or a necessity if over wintering in Spain?

we found our privacy room useful, However if you intend to use it in the summer months the privacy room does of course shut out the sun so you then have to sit outside of the 'room' area so effectively your pitch becomes a smaller one, other negative point is the majority let in rain, perhaps not so much with zip type awnings/privacy rooms which of course are very costly when compared with a standard awning/privacy room..these were our experiences when we owned our privacy room, we have yet to use the van over a long winter period based, say in Spain so the cost of purchasing a privacy room again may well be worth it:RollEyes:

We have one. It's great. It's heavy. It's bulky.
We bought it three years ago when we bought our MH. We were still in tugger mode and booked onto one site for three months. It was absolutely ideal and although not completely watertight it never moved in even the strongest winds. Thing was we got itchy feet and moved on after two months. After that we never stopped in one place for more than 10 days and this year the safari room stayed at home.

I'd have thought you've more than enough room for entertaining in a Kontiki!
We had a safari room (for our James Cook) for a couple of years which we used in Spain (four weeks at a time). It was useful and we once fed 12 people in it! But much of the time it was just cluttered.
Travelling, it was bulky and at 24kg it was heavy too!
We sold it and bought a camping kitchen and placed it next to our awning making a handy place to store extra stuff and to cook in. A brill little tent and hardly weighs anything. We can also drive off site easily!
