So sad about the dogs but scary and very lucky no one was killed, the m/ h walls looks so thin , I always believe that dogs transported on motorways regularly should be crated but in this instance not many would have survived

it appears they were crated:thumb:
Just to make sure people know that the owners of these dogs were very responsible people who had all their dogs crated in Aircraft Approved crates. The motor-home was completely destroyed by the impact, and the three dogs which died were Rage the Toy Poodle, Sweetie the Cardigan and the new Crested puppy. It is widely reported that the RAC initially refused to help because there were dogs in the vehicle, and that the ladies had been waiting three hours in the early morning dark and cold before being hit by the lorry. The young lady who suffered a broken femur, collapsed lung and spinal fractures was Russian and had only been in this country a few hours. She was travelling with her two friends and all were on their way to a dog show.

Here is a link to yesterday evening's discussion on this very subject Chris.
Broken Link Removed
This is absolutely awful, I see the RAC is doing a certain amount of damage limitation by saying a specialist vehicle was on its way, while this may be true they must assume some responsibility for this accident. Maybe some good will come out of it in that ALL vehicles MUST be removed from the motorway to a place of safety, lets hope so because it could happen to anyone, not just motor homers.

It will be interesting to see how the RAC explain away the three hour delay. The Hard Shoulder is a deadlier place than many war zones.
why didn't the RAC park up behind the motorhome with his emergency light's?
although he refused to recover the motorhome with the dogs inside,he should have ensured the safety of the occupants and motorhome,i can see a huge lawsuit being filed against the RAC for lack of care:Sad:

But.. Dogs aside (and their death is very sad) ...
It does underline why you should not sit in your broken down vehicle on the hard shoulder..

It's a sad incident but does any blame attach to the RAC?

The cause of the initial breakdown is not mentioned in the press report so could the initial response vehicle have removed the MH from the motorway? We don't know.

The initial response vehicle could have stayed at the scene but what other incidents may then have been left unattended and what would have been the consequences of that? We don't know.

As Rainbow Chasers says Broken Link Removed on the other thread, there are several factors which have to be taken into account. None of those appear to have been considered by those criticising the RAC in their comments posted on the original article.

So, the Dethleffs was broken down for 3 hrs.......

That presents a very real hazard on the motorway.

RAC aside, where the bloody hell were the traffic police or Highway Agency wombles to at least provide some cones and flashing beacons to mitigate the danger to ALL motorway traffic?

Wisdom with hindsight, don't be to hard on us, it was born out of sympathy with those injured. No doubt an inquiry will clarify the situation.

yes, once involved they have a duty of care

we

this breakdown should have been high priority
the RAC have one of the largest fleet's of breakdown van's/truck's,and also uses contractor's,so one van in attendance would have no effect on breakdown cover for the area

what other factors? the motorhome was broken down on a motorway hard shoulder, the RAC attended, and refused to recover, then LEFT the motorhome and its occupant to their fate:Angry:
how any one can defend the RAC in this case is unbelievable:cry:
iv had dealing's with the RAC years ago,and they are the reason i have NO breakdown cover,on any of my vehicles:RollEyes:

The other point is what was the HGV driver doing on the hard shoulder, instead of lane 1, in the first place? Another thing we don't know.

Usual reasons, falling asleep or distracted by satnav, phone, laptop, etc.

The causes of most HGV motorway incidents.

I have breakdown cover but it's for me not the vehicle but if I was broken down and had the family with me and the dog I would insist they take the misses and the boys off the motorway straight away. Don't forget there could be thousands of people out there driving around with a dog in there car and don't know they may be not recovered so I think rac etc should do more to make sure drivers know this. But I must say why was there know compromise on moving this mh regarding who or what was in it as 3 hours Is far to long to be sat on the hard shoulder I would have phone the police and said can you help as it's dangerous to us and other road users.

I do enough. I have seen vehicles wander as well and make no excuse for any of them.

The point I was making is that people (especially the dog lobby commenting on the DM article) rush to criticise the RAC but make no mention of the fact that the crash (as opposed to the breakdown) happened because the HGV hit the MH.

i get your point about the hgv driver, but with hindsight, had the RAC acted responsibly 3 hours earlier the accident would not have happened.
this is why we have risk assessments,in this case the risk was not assessed,or assessed wrongly:Sad:

Spot on good point I feel they should do what ever it takes for the safety of the broken down vehicle and other road users

It would be helpful to see details of communications which did take place and also a time line. One of the DM comments says that a three hour wait was "widely reported" but I can't find the source in any of the reports which Google brings up.

We cross posted Chris, with me wondering where the 3 hours came from.

What if the initial RAC attender had stayed? Would the crash have been avoided or would an RAC vehicle have also been hit? Another unknown.

i think some of the people commenting on the daily mail ,know the victims,as they know the dogs breed's and names.

There are countless videos that show less than alert drivers subconsciously see a car on the "inside lane" pull over themselves only to discover far too late they are on the hard shoulder and the vehicle in front is at a dead stop.

Also we are getting used to using the hard shoulder as it has become policy to allow drivers to use it on congested sections. Now many drivers use it illegally to make that last mile to a junction.

This abuse of the hard shoulder legally or not, is totally wrong, I've been on stretches where there is no hard shoulder for miles, just a solid 4 or 5 lanes of traffic. It makes me cringe, should anything happen the emergency services just cannot get there.

Yes, that's the comment I meant - but where was it "widely reported"?
