Is there a previous post recording police emergency telephone numbers (from mobile phones) in the main European countries?
(If not, can anyone advise for Spain, France and Italy ideally please?)
Thanks

most of those are direct call numbers.....112 will get an emergency operator and redirect the call if necessary.

why remember all the different numbers when 112 does the same job ?

112

Within Europe 112 has been introduced as a single number so that people crossing borders don't have to search around for the emergency number. You will find that English is widely spoken by 112 operators as its becoming almost the default language across Europe.

On mobile networks, calls to 112 are handled differently to calls to other numbers. Normally a mobile handset will request access to the network and then ask for a call to be setup, passing the number to be called. When the user dials 112 the handset request priority access to the network and then requests "Emergency call setup" no number is passed.

The network will give the emergency call priority including, when necessary, dropping calls already in progress to allow the emergency call to go through.

Most (probably all) handsets know about alternative emergency numbers so if the mobile is in the UK and the user calls 999 the handset will use the emergency call procedure.
