Has anyone done this? The underseat area at the back of our van would be a lot more usable if it were accessible from outside. I'm thinking about fitting one like this.

Are there any "gotchas" to a job like this?

Yes...
We used to have an Autotrail scout that had external lockers on both sides. Very handy. Later changed to an Apache 700 which was same layout but only had 1 locker.....

I bought the door frame like the one you have shown.. Not brave enough to do it myself so went to Dave Newell ( funster).. It was Dave's first one that he had fitted but did a great job and was well pleased.... Measurements were critical as it was very close in the space... The cut out piece of wallboard makes the locker door.

Cutting the hole a inserting the frame, should not be a problem..

Problems start in where to put it... under floor level will need a lot of thought regarding fixing the actual locker... and how bigger locker you can put in the free space..

Level with the floor... have you got the space to put the internal parts of the locker, or if utilising an under seat area is it worth all the hastle if you can already get inside this locker from the inside..

For some one doing a self build, I should think it would work well.. :thumb:

Thanks, it looks like some careful measuring may be required but doable. Fortunately, the closer I look at our van the more I realise that it's no newcomer to modifications so I'm not too worried about spoiling an "out of the factory" look. :roflmto:

I put a different type of door in our last van.

It was a case of measure, measure and measure again before attacking the wall with a drill and jigsaw. I even got a mate to help double check the measurements!!!! :Eeek:

Check the link in my signature picasa tinsnail

Measure and check everything before you cut or drill a hole

Be prepared for a lot of polystyrene dust no problem with it

But it's a right burger to clean up !!!!!!!?????

Once you drill the first hole your committed to finish

Make sure you have everything to complete the job

Including sealant ( sikaflex )to seal and secure the door/ flap

Oh and the best of luck
