At Malvern this weekend we had a bed gas strut fail. We had to travel home with the bed wedged up with bits of wood. We added a mattress topper when we bought the van and the added weight was obviously too much for the original Hymer gas struts.

Stuart (Silkcut1105) told me about SGS Engineering Solutions who specialise in gas struts. The pleasant chap on the phone knew precisely what struts I needed. I told him about the matress topper and he calculated the extra weight and said they would uprate the gas strut from 1700N to 1850N which will easily account for the extra weight. The best bit is that they only cost £75 a pair and I'll have them tomorrow:thumb:

Then you need to fit them though Jim.

With my skills, they would stay in the box and I would stick with the wood:thumb:

I have been told they need fitting with the bed up?

This may be nonsense, but I will watch your post for some good advice and see how you get on. Good luck though!

Thank you James, I have exactly the same problem and in my own "TREACLE" type of way have lived with a couple of wooden blocks for several months now.

Felicitations ..........Griff

Here is a 'how to do it' account from the Tips section of the Hymer Club International. I am not a member, but their website is open to browse. Not sure how old the posting is so the price information at the end may be well out of date.

"WARNING THESE STRUTS HAVE VERY HIGH PRESSURE RAMS"
This procedure can be done by a competent DIYer
To replace a gas strut it is very important to make sure that there is no residual pressure on the locating pins. To achieve this, the bed must be set and held as high as possible, using the travel strap. I found it easier if the bed was emptied including the mattress.
The split pins were then removed and the strut checked that it was fully extended by being loose on the location pins. I then carefully removed the drum end, pointing to the back of the van first. This to ensure that if there is any residual pressure remaining, the strut it would be travelling away from the windscreen. The new strut was then fitted in the same position and split pins re-located to secure the strut before lowering the bed.
I was able to do the above from the inside of the van, but some may find it as easy to do the above from outside by leaning through the driver's door and the sliding window.
I would recommend that both struts are changed. It is sod's law that you will remove the stronger strut first.
I obtained my replacement gas struts from Peter Hambilton, but I have since found that they can be obtained for approximately £32 + vat each from:

Are you sure it was the slight extra weight of the mattress topper that overloaded the strut?

JJ

Are you trying to say horizontal jogging broke them JJ:ROFLMAO:
