2" x 2".....hell of a hailstone :Eeek:

more likely a windblown tree branch or roof tile.

We had them in Sydney in 1989 the size and shape of Corn Cobs and in 1999 the size of Grapefruit
The Hail in 1999 smashed up 21000 homes, so much so, to clad Rooves in the original Slate, which the Heritage Council insisted on, a Slate Quarry in Wales was reopened to supply them, I got 14 months work out of that Storm, and there were still Rooves with Tarps over them when I left Sydney in 2000:Sad:

I watched a tv prog about this phenomenon a while back.

Britain, and probably most of Europe, dont have the weather conditions and criteria to produce these monsters.

water droplets begin to freeze then are pushed back up in updaughts then get bigger, then the cycle begins again until they too large and heavy to be pushed back up.

how big they get depends on the strength of the updraught...among other things.

we rarely have anything much bigger than a marrowfat pea....and that aint going to break through a polycarbonate window.

many many years! since I was a kid
never seen 50mm hailstones but have seen 30mm in the southern counties and the damage it leaves behind. makes a real mess of new cars and my friends dealership had all the cars on display on the forecourt damaged. many thousands of pounds of damage and loss of business. at home the polycarbonate car port was like swiss cheese as were many others

Lots, on and off, way back to VW splitty`s!
Not that rare. I have worked on hail damaged cars for the last 6 summers, mainly in Netherlands, last year in the UK and this year in Germany.

This happened 4 hours after I left Germany after a 2 week stint and they have had several more storms with large hail since then. Looks like I might be going back. :winky:

a very rare occurrence

not so rare as you seem to think. a simple google search throws up numerous "hits" of large hailstones. including one storm that put a hole through an aircraft wing whilst the plane was full with 200 passengers

if it was a rare occurrence, then the specialist repairers as the chap above wouldn't have work in the UK

I have to say it`s quite rare in the UK to get large hail but it seems to be coming more frequent. There was a storm local to me last friday that caused some damage to cars.

You can get UV stable repair tape - looks like a wide roll of sellotape. That is great for repairing, lasts in all weather and will do until you get a replacement. If you have nothing else then duck tape will do temporarily, but will not last well in the heat.

They can get damaged, though it only effects performance if the cell itself is damaged. The cells are covered by either a silicone sheet, or an acrylic sheet. The acrylics sheet are stronger and can withstand 2" hailstones, whereas the silicone ones will only withstand half that.

I`m a newbie, now 1 year
Oh yes we have had 2" hail stones on the 28th June last year, it was on the television, we are in Leicestershire, and millions of pounds worth of damage was the result,

My husband had 600 dents in his Mondeo Titanium X, he had only had the car 3 weeks, luckily they were able to repair, did a good job, our caravan on the other hand was a write off, took the insurance company 3 months to decide this as there weren`t able to get the panels, we also had 2 holes in the roof, as we had new for old, we had to have a new caravan, had to put cash to it though, otherwise we would have lost out, my Volvo estate missed it as I was out miles away.
So yes we do have extreme weather in this country. we also had an earthquake which was also on the news., at the time I was at my computer, all of a sudden my chair was turning round and I was at the other side of the room, so now we don`t rule anything out.:Eeek:

I worked on that storm, me and a pal were at Paynes Ford in Hinckley. They were hit fairly light but I know just down the road at Burbage they had some major damage.

`It`s an ill wind` as they say :winky:

Glad you got it fixed relatively easily. Always found getting spares/accessories from Brownhills a good experience.
