Part-exchanging - what stays with the 'van? (1 Viewer)

It looks increasingly likely that I'll be part-exing my currrent 'van in near future. But am wondering what to leave in it? Obviously personal effects come out, but what about the road tax disc [which I only renewed in June], the two full gas bottles, the mains hook-up and the 25m filling hose?

If selling privately, all these would be negotiable, but in part exchange, my instinct is to remove them as they are not 'fixtures and fittings' and their presence or absence will make no difference to the trade in price. In contrast to, say, the second battery [fitted only 2 months ago, sob...] and the bike rack. Any advice?

If your dealer has viewed the van and then giving you a valuation then everything on the van is sold with it except personal effects.

In the same way, everything you see on the van you have agreed to buy should be on it.

As a rule of thumb I would expect that you would keep movable items (especially if they had to be bought as extra when the van was new (e.g. gas bottle, EHU lead)) but anything permanently attached (e.g. bike rack) when the dealer made the offer and the tax disc would have to stay as the offer might have taken those into account.

if its a trade-in then in my view...everything you want comes out before the dealer sees it.

as Peter said, the agreed price would include everything the dealer sees but the offered price wouldnt reflect the true value of the accessories and extras. (nothing personal Peter as i know you are one of the good guys oh

you will be getting below private market value from a dealer so why line their pockets, then have to buy the same stuff again.

When we part exchanged via Peter's dealership we told them that we wanted the gas bottles moved onto the new van and the sat dome.

No problem or quibbles at all.

I can also tell you that the money offered for my van ( without it even being seen) was £5k more than another dealer was offering against a much cheaper van.

I really can vouch for Johns Cross. My wife and I walked out of there thinking we had just spent a lot of money but neither of us left thinking we had been ripped off.:thumb:

My dealer has given me a new EHU on both occasions I've bought a van, so I've got a collection but you just tell him you're keeping it if that's what you want to do. The water hoses could well be specific to the van i.e the external connector could be a special fitting so should stay as part of the original equipment. I left empty gas bottles on mine which the dealer was aware of, anything else you want should be stowed back home before the dealer sees it.

For me it was part of the negotiation.

I listed all items on an Excel and sent it via email and then this was my starting point ie all items removed although actually I didn't want to take any of them out (rear view cam, Truma Monocontrol, SOG, bike rack). After I got their final final offer I said I'd leave these items in for £xxx and they agreed as they knew it made sense for their resale of the van.

I have no additional road tax to pay on my MH here so that was easy

If selling privately then I would leave the items in the van but if through a dealer then I would remove them, the dealer will remove them because they like buyers to buy them new off them. When I bought my van privately the seller left everything with the van it was ready to go on holiday with and I really appreciated it.

Tax disc....... Reading the V5 from Dawn's Focus, we were entitled to and received we had the tax disc given back as dealers can't cash them in any more.

When I px'd my last van, I made it clear that the Gaslow system was coming out but all else stayed. Put it in writing as well so no arguments.

take the tax as you are now the only person that can claim it back so it will have no value to the dealer nd will possibly run out before he gets a sale
i found this out the hard way by taxing a friends car for a few days use thinking it would only cost me a month of tax by the time it had gone back and forth i paid for three months for a weeks use

The offer for the 'van has been made 'sight unseen' based on its age, mileage and my description of its condition. As is my offer for theirs as it is being brought from another showroom! We are having a mutual viewing on Friday, so guess I'll see what's in their's, then point out what I do not regard as included in mine. I like the idea of listing what's 'extra' and so may do that to take with me in writing.

Be carefull with sight unseens as I have heard of a major xxxxxxxx xxxxxx trying to renage on that, when he came to actually completing the deal, they said his van needed £4000 spending on it.

Needless to say he walked and demanded his deposit back and came to us and bought his van here without further ado, I would add his van did not need anything more than normal service and rectification to our retail standards

Good point. I shall caveat emptor even more than usual! But the van we're after is a rare beast and so we have little choice as to where we buy from.

I would do a damp test n your own van prior to going, that way no nasty suprises at best, or if its ok no salesperson trying to tell you its got damp when it hasn't.


Many many years ago a caravan salesperson told me he had two damp meters (with varable settings) one set to register any slight damp as major, the other set up not to show damp.

I would hope this does not go on today, but its best to get it independantly checked.

I must admit, I heard of a strange one recently for things being removed from a van.

Customer was trading in hers, and asked me to removed TV, and Roofbox for her as she had told the dealer she was keeping them......then she asked if it was normal to remove the status aerial!

'no, its' part of the van, you'll leave a hole in the roof' I replied.

She then said 'the one I am buying has no aerial, the previous owner removed it.....'

Well! that was a pleasant surprise! Just been to view the van. The salesman told me to remove the gas cylinders and tax disc before bringing it back to exchange vehicles. All in all a pleasant experience - the mechanic took ours away for what seemed an age, when we thought it was bound to result in teeth-sucking and a shake of the head, but no - all good and the deal we had agreed over the phone went through. We were also pleasantly surprised to find that the new van possessed, which had no been advertised: alloy wheels; Camos satellite system and box; LED lights; dual gel leisure batteries. This on top of the aircon, cruise control, 3 litre lump and bike rack that we knew about. All in all, we is very happy with the exchange - due to swap in next week or so. And I'll be posting a positive dealer review as well, assuming all goes through as planned.

Not about a motorhome but still relevant as the contract was the same. A friend of mine was a second hand car dealer, specialising in quality vehicles. He was approached by a member of my extended family to sell his pride and joy BMW and buy something else

anyway, the BMW was viewed and valued as being in top condition with all the toys, bells and whistles. a deal was struck and deposit paid, so the new car was put through a thorough service and PDI. the family member was delighted with the deal and went home having arranged to collect the car the next saturday.

on the day of collection he drove to the dealers in his BMW to drop it off and collect his new car. my friend as is customary came out to check there was no new damage etc to the car. what he found however was that the car had been stripped of all after market accessories, such as high end audio, extra chrome fog lights, bespoke steering wheel and gear knob, mats and a few other things. in places this had even left holes where the parts had been fitted

the idiot selling the car could not understand why the deal was now off. it turned into quite a row really and was an embarrassment between my friend and myself. without the parts the car was worth far less than valued when first seen. therefore it was a breach of contract and a clear attempt to con the dealer

if you get a van valued, basically anything screwed to the structure becomes part of the fixtures and fittings, so is part of the price quoted. removing fitted parts after this point is not on. obviously personal effects or items not screwed down are not included. who would want your old crockery or a pair of your pants left in a cupboard?

Blimey - this gets better. As well as: alloy wheels; Camos satellite system and box; LED lights; dual gel leisure batteries; cab aircon; cruise control; 3 litre lump and bike rack, the 'van I'm buying turns out to have a solar panel fitted as well. Couldn't see it on roof ]natch] and had missed the wiring and controller that was in wardrobe. There's not much left for me to want. Looking even better...

Surely it's whatever you like to leave in it BUT, as stated above, if you someone has viewed and you come to an agreement you should not then start removing items from the van.

When I sold mine I found out what I would have in the new van and what I would not need and then left everything not needed in the van.
