Don't know if you are in the CCC they are running a rally just a bus stop away to Princess Street for the Fringe Festival and the Tattoo at £6:50p a night, no booking required.

We are also going to Edinburgh around that time for the fringe too.

Can't help with wild-camping close to Edinburgh, but we are booked into the CC site at Silverknowes and will get public transport into the city centre.
This site is about 15 minutes away from Princes Street, but Carol's idea sounds good at £6.50 a night:thumb:

Again we can't beat Carols's £6.50 a night, it's gotta be worth joining the CCC if you plan to stay for a few nights at that rate.........:thumb:

Last year when we took mum in law with us in the van, we stayed on the Mortonhall site. Easily accessed 5 minutes of the A720 Edinburgh bypass. Its a bit expensive at about £23 or £25 a night at this time of year, but a nice site, with good bar and restuarant

Link Removed

The regular buses running all day stop right outside the campsite gate and will take you to Princes Street in about 30 minutes. It's a really nice bus ride sitting up front on the top deck. Andrew (aged 3 then) loved it, and so did we....

Over the years have used both Silverknowes and Mortonhall. Both have easy access to city centre and are secure. Knowing Edinburgh I would not wild camp anywhere in the city, you'll either get ticketed or disturbed.

Our fourth glorious year!
Have to agree that to get good access to the city wild camping is not a realistic option.OK you can wild camp in Scotland but this is in the remote parts of the west coast and highlands not in the capital city!:thumb:

I suppose at the end of the day you look at a location and way it up whether it looks safe and "hassle/risk free". We are now quite familiar with staying at Silverknowes CC site and have just booked up there again for next month when we have tickets for one of the Fringe shows. So we're happy to pay for feeling the security of the CC sites. We look forward to trying out our first "wild camp", but it will be in a relatively quiet spot, away from potential troubles that would worry us.
Having walked around Leith during the day, there is no way we would "free camp" in that location. But perhaps someone who is younger might be quite happy to do so.
The bus into the city from Silverknowes is £1.50 a single and not far to walk to the nearest bus stop. The public bus service into the centre is excellent. Although there is also a mini bus that leaves and returns to the site at certain times. This was £5 for a return, but at least you will be picked up and dropped off back at Silverknowes.
The only problem with this is that there are limited trips in and back, (the last one being around 6.30 pm) so no use if you want to stay out a bit later and have a meal out.
We have never tried Morton Hall, having been warned off it by someone as being too big, over-crowded and noisy. But each to their own I suppose.

Hi there,
We live near Edinburgh and can recommend the Slatebarns Caravan Club CL at Roslin. There is also a non club caravan site next door owned by the same people. Bus stop into city within 100 yards and lovely pleasant site. It's next to Roslin chapel. If you fancy it you need to book asap.
Enjoy!

There are some spots in the city you could wild but you will probably get disturbed or moved on as all land is private up here!

As ive said before silverknowes is just round the corner from me and is a nice site with good security (the Itinerant's have set up camp about half a mile away) not been to Mortonhall but stayed in the site at dunbar that seems to be owned by the same group and that was nice.

Staying on the outskirts could suit at this place http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=1673 they run a nice site and are motorhome mad! Busses run all night into the village and the sun inn does some fantastic food :thumb:

Just for clarity to anyone planning to visit Edinburgh, the bus tickets are a set price of £1.50 per journey or £3.50 for a day pass. These fares apply throughout the city, even into the suburbs so a ticket from Roslin is the same price as a ticket from Silverknowes. The Silverknowes site will fill up first because it's the most convenient.
The day pass is great value for hopping on and off all day with no limits.
Bus drivers don't carry change and it's a pay slot so make sure you have the right money.
During the festival the influx of visitors is amazing and accommodation fills up fast.

Keith, do you know if the gypos at still camped near Silverknowes?

We're off up to Silverknowes on 23rd and wondered if they'd been shifted by now. It's a long walk back to the site from the main road:roflmto:

Oh that's really good of you. We usually turn right as we come out of the site, we walked back every night in the dark last winter, didn't meet a soul until the last night. There aren't any street lights along there for most of the road, but it's fine if you bring a torch. Ours is usually flat before we get back to the site though:Doh:

Thanks very much for doing that:thumb:

All gone, seems they have left a very old van behind. If you turned left from the site and walked past old almond house they were down the hill on the grass at the sea front :thumb:

Hi Keith! Thanks very much for the info, we always turn right on our way out and just wander along Marine Drive to catch a bus on the main road, think it's Muirhouse Parkway. We would turn left when leaving in the van though, so know the bit you're meaning.
What kind of van have they left? Is it worth selling on?:ROFLMAO:::bigsmile:
Appreciate your help, if you're in the area between 23rd and 26th we might very well give you a wave:thumb:
