We have read Dave (Snowbird ) comments now and then that Shell Island was one of the nicest places to be after the weekend, so lunch time today after a lovely journey here stopping off at Bala lake for Ed to watch Moto GP, could not believe the people there picnicking and paddling in the Lake, a wonderful atmosphere.

We carried on through Barmouth (N. Wales) the beach, packed every where looked alive, then we got to Shell Island we were not disappointed the weekend campers had gone so we had lots of choice where to camp.

People on the beach Cooking people by the sea at 9.30 pm. Picture of our van where we are. Lots to explore tomorrow.

Stayed near Tywyn this weekend on a lovely CL, a few miles along from you. Cardigan Bay yesterday was absolutely stunning and the water was actually warm enough to enjoy a swim in

Tywyn is where we are off to on Friday when the week enders arrive again Shell Island becomes a different animal then. The CCC Folk group have a rally at Pal Mal Farm there we stumbled on it by accident (Ed would never have gone if he had known) but it is a really good meet with lots of different music and singing in the evening, and brilliant bike rides around Cader Idris and Bird Rock in the day.

This morning a bit cooler about 20 deg, so took off to explore the Island on our bikes, the site is 450 acres of which 300 acres available for camping so many nooks and crannies some in the sand dunes some in little wood copices some overlooking shell islands own harbour. Forgot to take my BlackBerry so only one photo of cooking tea tonight

I spent three consecutive 1970s summer holidays on Shell Island from the age of 16 camping with my mates - it helped consolidate my love of camping in various forms, which has remained ever since.

I fondly recall the endless expanses of sand dunes, though I'm not sure if they're fenced off now.

I don't know if you're touring the area but can I put in a good word for the bit of coastline between Borth-y-gest and Black Rock Sands? Some lovely secluded beaches along the Glaslyn Estuary, and plenty of camping spots around Morfa Bychan.

Also if you're heading back Barmouth way, the bike track over the rail bridge and along the Mawddach river toward Dolgellau is well worth an explore.

Heck Suggy, just missed you, we are still enjoying ourselves, we are in the corner overlooking the sea on the same field as you and Rosie, this morning as we sat outside having breakfast we watched 6 Dolphins swimming by the sea was so calm you could hear the sounds they were making to one another, the beach below us is all shells but just 1 minute you come to a mile of golden sand and sand dunes, yesterday we went for a cycle ride into Llanbedr came across a mobile farrier shoeing a horse at the side of the road,

Had a wonder around the village found the little church tucked away and open, very simple but I have never see brass shine so much, then wondered up to the Victoria pub for a meal in the beer garden overlooking the river.

We had a look for Dave (Snowbirds ) Winery, but found out it has been closed for a couple of years.

Today after breakfast it was so warm we just walked along the waters edge amazed how quiet it was, though there were people swimming. In the afternoon we cycled along to Shell Island's own harbour.

A few pictures along the way.

So glad you found the spot we told you about Graham, sounds like you enjoyed it. Amanda loves it there. Once when we were there an amateur theatrical group turned up for Photographs and dress rehearsal of calamity Jane. They took over the section with the big round tables and where dancing ect.. a sight to be seen, Amanda loved it.

Hi Jaws, we camped up where it said Shell Beach Car Park, right on the edge by the sea so we could have fires on the beach at night, you do need your bike to explore it, with it being bank holidayI bet it is busy, plenty of room though and the beach goes on for miles, the harbour is down the other side of the site, pub in village did really good meals and there is a really good butcher next to the craft shop in the village.
