During first light a baby Woodpecker must have flown into one of the big bay windows...

When we found him he was in a poor state... Picked him/her up and screeched like a banshy...

Put it back where the other woodpeckers feed and hoped Mum or Dad would come and feed it...

Just been out after 5 hrs or so and he is where we left him and almost lifeless...

So wrapped it up in a blanket and put it in a box in the kitchen.... thought if he is going to die he would die warm...

Cant put it back where we think the nest may be..... it`s in a valley about half a mile away... and wouldn`t know where to put it..

He has perked up now it`s warmer,,,, took it back outside and it just flopped to the ground.... and it is persisting down with rain and it was soaked within minutes...

So bought it back in.... it has perked up a bit and is just sitting watching the TV...

What do they eat that is readily available for us to try and feed him/her... ?

Thanks...

Thats one of the reasons they peck at tree trunks, to find bugs etc.

Mo, he looks pretty lively to me, I would think he'll thrive if he gets plenty bugs, caterpillars, crushed peanuts, larvae etc it will keep you occupied tried to hunt for these:roflmto:
We get them feeding on the peanut holders throughout the year, only had one bird casualty this year so far, a baby siskin or something similar. Like you I thought a parent would come back for him, but they didn't and the poor litttle thing died:Sad:

Looks like you may have a new family member! Great if you're happy to keep him (or her?) but if not, try putting East Enders on; it always makes me do a runner.

We have them visit the birdfeeders every day - peanuts (have to be crushed or might choke a fledgling) and fat balls seem their favourite but would think mealworms/woodlice etc.
Good luck :thumb: we feel very lucky to see them regularly

The recommended diet is white (clean) maggots and mealworms, at a push you could try dog food but not catfood. plenty of fresh water of course and once perky enough keep out of draughs but do not heat that will just make it dehydrated.
I was a bird rehbilitator for 20 odd years and worked closely with St Tiggywinkles, and Secret world treating all kinds of wildlife.
that howcome I'm so poor, hee hee.

Maggots, mealworms, bugs etc?

Shame the little chap isn't here in my Wagon... he could feast away to his heart's content which would also help me with the cleaning mission...

Lucky he/ she never lost its beak in the crash..otherwise it would have been a headbanger instead of woodpecker.

Mealworms always seem to go down well - I bought a couple of kilos a while ago and it soon disappears once word gets out. Suddenly I'm the sparrows', blackbirds', starlings' and jackdaws' best friend

As for birds hitting windows - had a baby starling hit one a few weeks ago. Usually I wrap them up to stop heat loss due to shock, but the ground was very warm so I decided to keep watch initially, mainly because there was a jackdaw paying close attention.

The poor thing spent about 10 minutes going from flat-out, to swaying, to crouched and then to staring ahead, before snapping out of it and flying off. I'm always amazed at their powers of recovery :thumb:

Wont take worms or anything like that...

Crushed up some peanuts with a bit of banana to make them slimey so it would slide down it`s throat easier... and fed them through an injector thingy...

Put him in a box with a towel for bedding in a quiet room...

It`s so small I dont think it can fly properly... beats me how it got from the woods/copse to our place...

Got a horrible feeling it wont be with us in the morning... I tried...

Still alive and perky this morning... :thumb:

Fed it a full syringe of banana this morning and it`s asleep now...
Mrs is going to get a sloppy packet of dog food this morning, and try that..... cant get any bugs or worms down his throat, just spits them out...

I think it`s a "She" cos when I went in the room first thing it made some weird noises... think she loves me.. :thumb:::bigsmile:

He`s pecked through the stairs :Eeek:

It would have a hard job...............

We live in a bungalow....:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I tried JJ`s table leg idea for food.....

But it just bent it`s beak....

Spose that`s what happens when you have metal table legs...:winky::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
