Last year I think several people went to Val Thorens, my van is not really up for those temperatures, but is there somewhere to stay lower down that would be nice but then be able to cable car up

There is an aire with EHU at Les Menuires a bit down the valley.
Ricky (1948) stayed there last year, it might be worth asking him for an opinion.

les menuires is still pretty high.

there are far better alternatives if you don't mind jumping on to a cable car or even bussing in?

Generally many ski areas are reached this way and lots of people go to lower down resorts in apartments. However, depending on where and when you want to go, it might just be worth going to an apartment if you wish to go that way.

The advantage of a Motorhome ski holiday is the flexibility to move around and to be right adjacent to the slopes, ski in ski out is what I say
